WHAT A DAY! 🇺🇸🏃‍♂️

The inaugural Mesquite Police Association Charities Service Above Self 5K & Fun Run was a HUGE success!

We had over 200 runners registered, and we couldn’t have made this event what it was without every runner, sponsor, volunteer, vendor, and community member who showed up and supported us.

We wanted this event to be more than a race. It was about coming together as a community to remember the sacrifice of Officers Travis Williams and Richard Houston II and honor those who continue to serve others every day.

To our runners — thank you for showing up and putting in the miles.

To our sponsors — thank you for believing in this event and investing in our community.

To our volunteers — thank you for giving your time, energy, and Saturday morning to make everything run smoothly.

And to everyone who came out to cheer, support, participate, or simply be part of the day — thank you!

We are incredibly grateful for the support this event received, and we’re already excited about what the future holds.

Service Above Self. ❤️💙

Heroism. Courage. Ultimate Sacrifice.

At 4:35 a.m. on September 23, 1974, our community was changed forever.

Officer Travis Ed Williams—just 28 years old—was out on patrol, standing watch in the quiet morning hours so the people of Mesquite could sleep safely in their beds. When he stumbled upon a burglary in progress at an Exxon service station at Belt Line and Highway 80, Travis didn't hesitate. He put himself directly in harm's way.

In the darkness, gunfire erupted. Mortally wounded, Travis fought back with breathtaking bravery, managing to strike his attacker before collapsing. Though backup arrived within minutes, Travis tragically never regained consciousness, leaving behind a heartbroken department, family, and city.

Because of the wounds Travis inflicted, his killer was tracked down, brought to justice, and taken off the streets. Even in his final moments, Officer Williams was doing what he did best: protecting us.

Travis gave everything he had—and everything he would ever be—for the city he served. For his incredible courage, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and the Police Cross.

To Officer Travis Williams: Your heroism runs deep in our blood, your sacrifice is etched into our hearts, and your legacy will never be forgotten by the brothers and sisters of the Mesquite Police Department.

Rest easy, hero. We have the watch from here.

Today, we are honored to announce something that has been on our hearts for a long time.

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, the Mesquite Police Association and MPA Charities will host the Inaugural Service Above Self 5K & Fun Run.

This event is more than a race.

It is a promise that the lives and sacrifices of Officer Travis Williams and Officer Richard Houston II will never be forgotten.

It is an opportunity for our community to come together — not only to remember two fallen heroes, but to celebrate the spirit of service, sacrifice, and commitment they embodied every day they wore the badge.

Whether you run, walk, volunteer, sponsor the event, or simply stand along the course to cheer, you become part of something bigger than a finish line.

You become part of a new tradition dedicated to honoring those who gave everything in service to our community.
