Winkle started his community & economic development consulting firm, Innovative Urban Solutions, in 2013. He has worked on projects all over the Phoenix Metro Area in the areas of housing options, workforce development, neighborhood revitalization and transit oriented development. He graduated from ASU with a dual degree in Sustainability and in Urban Planning and completed his MBA at Wilkes. Ryan currently serves as Chair of Maricopa Valleywise Community Health Centers Governing Council, as the Chair of Az Asian Chamber of Commerce, and is a creator and supporter of multiple community organizations such as the ABAKA Foundation, Mesa Urban Garden and RAIL CDC. Ryan lives and works with his wife Ericka, his son Riancito, and daughter Kamila.

THREE GENERATIONS OF COURAGE!

Well, looks like my little Kamila Rose is carrying on a family tradition that began with Barbara Rae, and participate by Ryan Winkle and now Kamila.

On November 7th, she’ll be walking the runway at the 2026 Courage Under Cancer Fashion Show & Gala, representing the THIRD generation of our family supporting this wonderful organization.

And she’s looking for sponsors! ❤️

Courage Under Cancer does something that matters. They help people fighting cancer pay for the things insurance and other programs won’t. Rent, utilities, groceries, and all those everyday expenses that don’t magically disappear when someone gets sick.

Kamila’s goal is to raise $2,000, and I’m asking our friends, familia, titas, titos, lolas, lolos, and neighborhood businesses to help her get there!

Five bucks, fifty bucks, five hundred. Whatever you can spare. It all helps somebody fighting a much bigger battle.

On my way to remind another “community leader” that the neighborhood is not their personal brand.

No eres el héroe, compa. Hindi ikaw ang bayani.

The titas and lolas were here before you. So were the homies, the vendors, the night-shift workers, the familias raising three kids on one paycheck, the soccer coaches, the señoras selling food out of their kitchens, the uncle who knows how to fix damn near anything, and the Lolo or Lola who somehow knows everything happening within six blocks and seven families.

They didn’t suddenly become a community because some self righteous loudmouth with a clipboard showed up with a grant, a title, a strategic plan and a microphone.

Stop saying you’re going to give people a voice. They have voices. We just haven’t been listening.

You’re not going to give people their power either. The power isn’t anyone’s to give.

It was already there, storied across kitchen tables, barber shops, mercados, sari-sari stores, churches, soccer fields, front porches, small businesses and generations of people quietly keeping one another alive.

That’s where the work begins. Not in giving power, but in recognizing it, connecting it and helping organize it into something that lasts.

Sometimes leadership means carrying somebody else’s torch for a few miles without carving your damn name into the handle.

Mutual aid. Camaraderie. Kapwa. Comunidad.

Nine of this work should be rooted in misery. We aren’t organizing neighborhoods simply to become better at surviving sh*tty things. We’re doing it so people can own a little more of their lives and a little more of the places they call home.

Parents getting home earlier. Someone with a great idea opening that business. A single mom owning her house. Somebody’s kid getting an opportunity their parents never had.

So the tables get longer. The food gets better. The music gets louder. And there’s always another chair when somebody unexpected walks in.

That’s a neighborhood worth fighting for.
Joy is part of the revolution.

Tired Ben and I waiting for political lackeys and consultants to climb over their massive party political egos to discover the real needs of people in the neighborhood.

We’ve been here so long the coffee has developed a platform.

Republicans show up preaching freedom with a list of people who shouldn’t have any. Democrats show up to “hold space,” then charge the campaign for the room. Both parties can find your block on a voter map. Somehow neither can find it when the election is over.

Then come the consultants. They parachute in eight weeks before voting day, take a photo in front of a mural, and call it deep community engagement. Ay, qué profundo. The sidewalk is still broken, but at least it made the mailer.

Online, it’s the same circus. A polished portrait, a flag in the background, and a statement so generic it could run for office itself. Visibility comes from showing up consistently. Authority comes from knowing what you’re talking about and answering people honestly. Neither can be purchased by the hour.

There’s enough money in politics to wallpaper Mesa with smiling faces. I’d settle for one campaign that remembers the people living behind the walls.

Ben and I will be in the alley. Bring coffee. Leave the talking points.

Do it for the neighborhood.
