Mercedes directs the ministry founded by Pastor John Stott: “Langham Preaching Schools” in Antioquia, Colombia. Pastors and leaders undergo three years of training in biblical preaching there. It is also mobilizing missionaries to different parts of the country and outside of Colombia. Additionally, she supports the ministry “Cristo Para la Ciudad” by providing pastoral support to pastors both within and outside of the city.

Mercedes also collaborates with a local church. Together with other brothers, she established a foundation for the prevention of children and teenagers against sexual abuse, drug addiction, murder, etc. She is also forming a missionary movement to mobilize the church in Antioquia in support of God’s mission.

Empowered by the Spirit: The Role of the Holy Spirit in Missions

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NIV)

When Jesus gathered His disciples on that mountaintop before His ascension, He didn't hand them a strategic plan or a marketing blueprint. Instead, He promised them something far more powerful: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). This wasn't just encouragement—it was a fundamental truth about how God's kingdom advances.

Today's missionaries carry this same promise into villages, cities, and forgotten corners of our world, reminding us that effective ministry flows not from human ingenuity but from divine empowerment. Understanding the Holy Spirit's role in missions isn't just theology; it's the difference between religious activity and transformative kingdom work.

Memorial Day challenges us to value and respect human life, as well as to recognize the supreme sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. The sacrifice of men and women in the armed forces is a tangible reminder of love, courage and commitment to others.

As followers of Christ, we must be willing to sacrifice our personal interests for the welfare and freedom of others. Jesus taught us that there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends, and this is poignantly manifested in those who gave their lives in military service. Furthermore, the Gospel calls us to seek peace and reconciliation by actively working for a world in which sacrifice and violence are not necessary.

Alvaro is currently working with a team of Costa Rican pastors, giving the Interface Seminar to other pastors in Latin America and challenging them to transform their churches into missional churches, where every believer sees life on mission with God as the normal Christian life.

Magdiel started Iglesia Dios Soberano at San Felix in November 2017. This is a community of over 300,000 people. The community has an old history that dates to the 1700’s and has four universities. One of the main characteristics of this city is all the small businesses in the area. The church has a strong emphasis on evangelism at plazas, universities, home and on the streets.
