CEOs report the top three methods for board recruitment are board member networks, CEO networks, and members of the community served by the organization. Only 7 percent of respondents reported using a board matching service as part of their recruitment process.

Many states don’t offer a board matching service, or if they do, a fee is required to use them.

AZ Leaders on Board is a free board matching tool that helps AZ nonprofit organizations tap into a network of candidates interested in board service that they likely didn’t have access to before. This tool is meant to supplement the recruitment process and strengthen our nonprofit sector.

Board matches are consistently being made through our site! Register and start utilizing this unique service today.

This month we heard from the women who serve on our own board. Our chair shares her advice on how nonprofits can support women interested in board service:

"One of the best things nonprofits can do to support women interested in board service is to ensure they have diverse women on their boards and leadership teams. While I realize this is a bit circular, organizations that have a homogenous board and/or leadership team don’t know what they don’t know.

If you want a diverse board, you need a diverse organization, and vice versa. To support women on your board, you need powerful women in your organization.”

When women sit at decision-making tables, communities benefit from more well-rounded solutions, more equitable outcomes, and leadership that reflects the people being served.”

We’re wrapping up Women’s Month with some advice from one of our amazing board members. March is almost over, but recognizing the women who make your organization great should happen year round. ✨

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we’re sharing stats on how women fare in nonprofit leadership roles. Women make up the majority of employees in the nonprofit sector. However, larger organizations with bigger budgets tend to have more men in leadership roles than women.

And there are of course plenty of nuances with data like this. The numbers shift when various intersections of identity, such as race and gender, are accounted for. One example being that nonprofits led by women of color receive less funding than nonprofits led by white women.

Consider what identities, perspectives, and voices might be missing from your nonprofit board. How can your organization foster diverse and inclusive board leadership?
