Today in 1863, Pennsylvania general Alexander Hays and his men helped repulse the Confederate assault known as Pickett's Charge. One of his soldiers recalled of the immediate aftermath: "At Gettysburg when Longstreet's memorable charge of the 3rd of July had been repelled, and the twelve regiments of Hays' Division had captured 2,600 prisoners and 21 stands of colors, General Hays took a rebel flag, and two of his staff. Capt. George P. Corts, Assistant Adjutant General, and Lieut. David Shields, each with a captured flag, rode down in front of his command and in the rear, trailing the rebel colors in the dust, and, amid deafening shouts and cheers of the men, who for a moment forgot the terrible scenes and thought only of the glory of their victory."
