An event to raise awareness of limb loss and limb difference will bring together a number of organizations in Sun Prairie. Featuring guest speakers, the April 18 Forward Event will include more than 25 vendors and connect individuals and advocates with resources.

Recently, the City of Sun Prairie proclaimed April 2026 as Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month to highlight the importance of communication, connection, representation and inclusion for individuals and families living with limb loss or limb differences.

First-ever limb loss awareness event connects experts and community

David Brockman, a firefighter for more than two decades, faced an uncertain future after an accident took his right arm.

His employer pushed him toward early retirement, but Brockman, a fire captain who loved his career, had other plans: He chose to get a prosthetic limb at UC Davis Health, and stayed on the job.

“I had to do everything like the guys with both hands and show I could do it with my prosthetic,” Brockman said. “I showed not only that I could do it, but that I could do it faster than some of the young guys.” He eventually left the fire service after 28 years: “I retired on my own terms, with my prosthetic limb.”

Understanding Limb Loss: Insights from Dr. Charles Stonerock on Causes, Prevention, and Life After Amputation

An estimated 2.3 million people in the United States are living with limb loss, And the number is expected to rise to 3.5 million by 2050, according to the National Amputee Coalition. We spoke with Dr. Charles Stonerock, a vascular surgeon at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center and an associate professor of surgery, to learn more about the reasons for limb loss, whether it can be prevented, and life after limb loss.

More than 5.6 million people in the United States live with limb loss or limb difference. But until recently, clinicians, researchers, hospitals, and others providing support to this community did not have a comprehensive resource of clinical data to help guide decision making and care.

In 2022, that changed with the launch of the Limb Loss and Preservation Registry (LLPR) external link, the first national database to standardize, collect, measure, and report on outcomes for those with limb loss or undergoing preservation surgery and post-surgical care and rehabilitation. Funded by NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the Department of Defense, the LLPR was established to collect and analyze patient data from diagnosis onward. The registry was founded and created by Mayo Clinic in partnership with the Thought Leadership & Innovation Foundation (TLI), a non-profit organization focused on data-driven solutions for underserved communities.

Two surgeons at Texas Tech Health El Paso are working to reduce amputations and improve outcomes for patients living with diabetes and complex lower-extremity conditions.

Dr. Marina Tony and Dr. Joshua Ekladios focus on limb preservation, reconstruction, trauma care and expanding access to treatment in a region with significant health disparities.

The couple said their shared commitment to patient care and service to underserved communities led them to pursue both a professional and personal partnership.
