We know we ask a lot.

We know every day it feels like there's another dog that needs help.

But today, we're asking for one that desperately needs someone to say yes.

This sweet bully is nothing but skin and bones. Every rib, every hip bone, every vertebrae tells a story of neglect and heartbreak. Somewhere along the way, the people who were supposed to care for him failed him. Yet despite everything he's been through, he's still looking at humans with hope in his eyes.

Tomorrow, he needs somewhere safe to go.

Not next week. Not when it's convenient.

Tomorrow.

A warm bed. A full bowl of food. A quiet place to finally rest his exhausted body and learn what love feels like.

Fostering saves lives. It's that simple.

He just needs someone willing to open their heart.

Sometimes people ask us why we do this.

Why do we answer the phone at 11 PM? Why do we leave our families, lose sleep, spend our own tears, and carry the weight of stories that most people would rather look away from?

Because of dogs like La Brea.

When the world becomes too much, when we need a reminder that kindness still exists, we rescue. Not because it is easy. Not because it is convenient. But because somewhere out there, a scared animal is waiting for someone to say, “I see you. I’m coming.”

La Brea spent a month surviving around a steel mill. Then she fell into a pit of waste sludge and coal tar.. Covered in a substance that trapped her body and stole her spirit. She could have given up.

But she didn’t.

And neither did we.

Today we sat with her because she still doesn’t understand that the nightmare is over. She has been so terrified and so emotionally broken that she hasn’t wanted to eat. No barking. No tail wags. Just a frightened little soul trying to understand why humans are suddenly being kind.

So we sat on the floor beside her. We whispered to her. We told her she was safe. We promised her no one would ever let her suffer like that again.

And then she did something that brought us to tears.

She took a bite.

One bite, and then another, and then another...

Something so small to most people felt like a mountain moving for us.

Her fight isn’t over. Her white blood cell count is elevated, and we are watching her closely. Thankfully, her kidney and liver values are looking okay, but there is still a long road ahead and we have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

To every person who has donated, shared, prayed, and sent words of encouragement—you are the reason we can keep saying yes. Every dollar, every share, every ounce of support is helping write the next chapter of La Brea’s life.

This is why Big Dogs Don’t Cry exists.

Not for the easy stories.

Not for the perfect dogs who never knew pain.

For the ones covered in tar.
The ones who are terrified to eat.
The ones who have every reason to stop trusting people.

We will sit with them for as long as it takes until they believe they are worth saving.

💕 Sometimes being an amazing volunteer has its perks… 💕

The moment Kristyn laid eyes on this precious little German Shepherd baby boy that we committed to, she just knew. There was no second guessing, no waiting, no scrolling through an adoption page… her heart said, “He’s mine.”

And just like that, Colt’s story changed forever. 💕

Congratulations to Ryan and Kristyn for officially saying, “He’s all ours!” This sweet boy, now known as Joey, didn’t even make it to our adoption website because he was exactly where he was always meant to be — with his forever family.

We truly wish every single one of our rescue babies had a loving family waiting for them the way Joey did. There is nothing more beautiful than watching a dog go from uncertainty to a life filled with love, comfort, and belonging.

Ryan and Kristyn, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you do for Big Dogs Don’t Cry. Your commitment, compassion, and endless love for our rescue babies never goes unnoticed. Volunteers like you are the reason we can continue saying “yes” to dogs who need us most.

💔🖤 Welcome to Big Dogs Don’t Cry, La Brea. 🖤💔

Last night around 11 PM, we received a call from an incredible human named Lisa. She had been made aware of a dog who had been surviving on her own for over a month around the U.S. Steel mill in Gary, Indiana. The workers there had been watching her, worried about her, and when tragedy struck, they knew she needed help.

This poor girl had fallen into a waste sludge/coal tar pit.

We immediately said YES.

In all our time in rescue, we can honestly say we have never seen anything quite like this. Her entire body was covered in thick, black toxic tar. We named her La Brea, after the famous tar pits in California, because her story is one of survival against unimaginable odds.

Today she was carefully shaved down to remove as much of the toxic substance as possible. We have been working closely with Poison Control and our amazing team at Crossroads Animal Hospital to create a plan to give her comfort and the best chance possible. We are running extensive tests to determine if this exposure has caused damage to her internal organs.

Can you imagine spending a month alone, terrified, trying to survive in an industrial area… and then enduring something this horrific?

But even through the pain, La Brea is showing us she wants to fight.

Right now, we need our village more than ever. Her medical care will be extensive, and every single dollar will go toward giving her the chance she never had.

It’s been a while since we’ve welcomed a new foster family, and without fosters, we can’t keep saying “yes” to dogs that need us. Every open home means another life saved. Every foster who steps up changes a dog's entire future.

This handsome Aussie boy is estimated to be around 2 years old and is looking for either a foster or forever home. He’s dog-friendly, ignores cats, and is ready to leave rescue limbo behind and start the next chapter of his life.

The hardest part? Dogs like Pinto Bean are counting on people they haven’t met yet. They're counting on someone scrolling past this post to stop and say, "I can help."

🚨💔 TOMORROW MAY BE TOO LATE 💔🚨

Tonight, three innocent dogs are going to sleep not knowing if anyone will fight for them.

🐾 A beautiful cattle dog girl
🐾 A sweet pittie girl
🐾 An American Bulldog mix boy

All three have a deadline tomorrow.

While we are tucking our pets into warm beds, they are sitting behind kennel doors waiting... hoping... wondering if someone will see their worth before time runs out.

They don't know they are on borrowed time.
They don't know what a deadline means.
They only know they are scared, alone, and desperately waiting for someone to choose them.

Imagine spending every day watching people walk past your kennel, hoping each person is there for you. Imagine your whole future depending on whether one person decides to say, "I'll help."

That person could be YOU.

The cattle dog girl deserves to know what safety feels like.

The pittie girl deserves to know what unconditional love feels like.

🐾💕 Hi everyone, it’s Miley!💕🐾

At just 9 weeks old, I’ve already found my forever family! 🎉🏡

My new mom and dad, Gina and Erik, couldn't be happier, and honestly, I think I hit the jackpot too. ❤️ I even have a new brother, Flea, who was so excited to welcome me home. We’re already planning a lifetime of adventures, cuddles, and probably a little bit of trouble. 🐶🐾

Before I got my happy ending, I was lucky enough to be loved by my amazing foster, Rachel. Thank you for keeping me safe, nurturing me, and helping me grow until my perfect family found me. You gave me the best start possible. ❤️

Now it's time for puppy naps, belly rubs, toys scattered everywhere, and making memories with the family I'll love forever. My story is just beginning, and I couldn't be more excited.

Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way. Rescue dogs may start their journey differently, but the ending is always worth it. 🥹💕
