Three things to do in your garden this fall for a better garden next year:

1. Test your soil. Test kits are available online or at gardening centers that will tell give you a good idea of how nutrient-rich your soil is. Or you can send off soil samples to a lab for a more accurate test. Then ammend as needed, using organic matter that will break down into your soil over the fall and winter.

2. Use fall leaves and disease-free garden cleanup to cover your empty garden beds or use as mulch. Leaves are an excellent way to protect the soil and add nutrients to it.

3. Plant a cover crop. They prevent soil erosion, crowd out weeds, and - come spring - get chopped down and used as mulch to feed the soil. Some popular cover crops include annual rye, clover, buckwheat, and hairy vetch.

Fall is just about here again. Time to escape into the woods. The leaves have started to turn, the air is crisp, and the world is letting out its annual sigh of relief. We can join it, if only for a minute, with a walk among the trees. Time to identify your maple trees!

Fall is a great time for you to make good on your goal of identifying some maples (or some more maples) for your DIY maple syrup-making operation.

Did you know? You can make maple syrup from any tree in the maple family that is 10 inches in diameter at chest height. So, grab a tape measure and some marking tape, and take a moment in the trees. You'll be glad you did.

It’s about that time of year when I start looking at empty gallon milk jugs a little differently. Instead of tossing them, I wash them out, pull the labels off, and start setting a few aside.

They’ll come in handy for winter sowing later on.

But what if you get a lot of snow?

That’s one of the first things folks wonder about, especially in zone 5 or 6 where those jugs might spend a good chunk of winter buried under the white stuff.

And yes, they can stay outside.

That’s really the whole point. Winter sowing lets seeds experience the cold, moisture, and temperature swings they would naturally get outdoors. For seeds that need a period of cold stratification, winter is actually doing part of the work for you.

The jug isn’t supposed to keep everything warm like a heated greenhouse. It gives the seeds a little protected growing space while still letting rain, melting snow, and cold weather do their thing.

The bigger things to watch are drainage and moisture. You don’t want the potting mix sitting waterlogged, but you don’t want it bone dry either. Then, once spring starts bringing warmer days and seedlings begin popping up, those little jugs can heat up surprisingly fast. That’s when ventilation starts becoming much more important.

Of course, what you sow and when you set the jugs outside depends on the seed and where you garden. A cold-hardy native perennial and a tomato aren’t going to follow the same schedule.

For now, I’m just saving the jugs.

Come winter, I’ll be glad I didn’t toss them.

Incredible Edible Prestwich and District (IEPAD) is a volunteer-led community organization based in Greater Manchester, England. Established in June 2010 and registered as a Community Benefit Society in 2019, the group focuses on growing fresh fruit, herbs, and vegetables in public spaces. Everything planted by the organization is completely free for members of the local community to pick and eat.
