The mission of the SPCA of Merced is to promote the prevention of cruelty to animals; to educate the public on the extreme importance of spaying and neutering in the effort to end overpopulation and euthanasia due to rampant overpopulation; to promote responsible adoption of animals to loving and permanent homes. We are dedicated to helping with large colonies, to the ver

We are dedicated to helping the community understand the importance of not only the TNR of homeless cats, but the importance of spaying or neutering their own domestic pet. Students play a huge role in helping support rescue work at Merced SPCA 💛

Volunteering is a great opportunity to:

At the beginning of the school year, Merced SPCA received a heartbreaking call from the maintenance team at a local high school. A mama cat and her kittens had been shoved into a cardboard box and thrown into the school dumpster.

Mom and her kittens were rescued safely and brought into our care, where they have spent the entire school year growing up with us in rescue and foster care. While students went through football games, holidays, finals, spring break, and now the last days of school… Brie, Pickles, Fig, and Olive have still been waiting for someone to choose them. 💔

They came to us terrified and discarded like trash, but over this school year they’ve learned safety, love, playtime, soft beds, full bellies, and what it means to be cared for.

Now summer is here, and we would truly love to see them finally find forever homes of their own.

Pickles, Fig, and Olive are sweet, playful, loving kittens, and mama Brie has been the most devoted mother through it all.

Right now, we are in need of more foster homes for rescue animals 💛

Fostering is one of the most important ways you can help Merced SPCA continue rescuing vulnerable kittens and cats. Every foster home opens space for another animal in need to receive care, safety, and a second chance.

Some foster animals need bottle feeding 🍼
Some need a quiet place to recover 🐾
Some simply need love, patience, and time before they are ready for adoption.

You do not need years of experience to foster—just compassion and a willingness to help.

And yes… you will probably end up with a camera roll full of cat photos 😅

Life Inside the Kitten Room 💛🐾

Kitten season is equal parts adorable and absolute chaos 😅

One minute, everyone is peacefully asleep in a pile.

The next:
🐱 someone is climbing the blanket like a mountain
🐾 someone is yelling dramatically for food
💛 someone discovered they can sprint at full speed
✨ and someone else is asleep through all of it

But behind the funny moments is something really meaningful.

These kittens are growing up safe.

They are warm, cared for, fed, and surrounded by people who want them to thrive.

For many rescue kittens, this is the first safe beginning they have ever had 💛

And that is why rescue matters so much.

This is what rescue looks like.

Sometimes the kittens don’t walk nicely into a trap. Sometimes they dart under houses, squeeze into impossible places, and make us work for it.

Thankfully, our rescue team knows how to handle just about any situation. With patience, experience, and a few quick moves, this tiny runaway was safely reunited with her blind and wobbly mama.

No matter the challenge, we do whatever it takes to get them to safety. ❤️🐾

Meet Chance ❤️

Yesterday, two tiny kittens were found tucked away in a storm drain. We monitored from a distance, hoping mama would return and move her babies to safety.

Unfortunately, mother cats will sometimes abandon a kitten if they believe it is sick or unlikely to survive.

As the hours passed, mama returned for the healthy kitten, carrying them away to a new hiding spot. But one baby was left behind.

The tiny kitten with eyes sealed shut from infection waited through the night, alone on the rocks where mama had left him. We continued to watch and hope she would come back, but morning arrived and she never returned.

That’s when it was time for us to step in.

Our team carefully scooped up the little fighter from the rock he had crawled onto for safety. Now, instead of facing the world alone, he has a warm bed, a full belly, and the medical care he desperately needs.

Because every kitten deserves a chance.

And that’s exactly why we named him Chance. ❤️🐾

Chance has a long road ahead of him. He will need medical treatment, formula, wipes, and around-the-clock care as he begins his journey to recovery.
