What a powerful afternoon in Merced! 🎬✊🏾💙

We were proud to host the screening of Disciples of a Craftsman and create space for honest conversations about community healing, family and generational trauma, fatherhood, mentorship, accountability, and opportunity.

The film also challenged us to look deeper at individual choices and responsibility, while recognizing the circumstances, experiences, and trauma that can shape those choices. Sometimes people act from a place where, in that moment, it feels like there is no other option.

Our conversation explored what it means to understand those realities without ignoring accountability, and how healing can create new choices, new possibilities, and a different path forward.

Thank you to Hatching Chick Media Group, our panelists, community partners, resource organizations, and everyone who showed up, listened, shared, and engaged.

Healing happens in community, and it can open the door to choices we may not have been able to see before. 💙🔥

🔥 Faith must move beyond the sanctuary and into the streets. 🔥

At the 111th Spingarn Award Freedom Fund Gala, Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III, Ph.D., Senior Pastor of Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, delivered a powerful tribute to Dr. Amos C. Brown, this year’s Spingarn Medal recipient.

Rev. Haynes reminded us that “Jesus and justice should always be united in holy wedlock.” He honored Dr. Brown as a pastor, civil rights leader, NAACP champion, and lifelong advocate for “the least, the last, and the left behind.”

Dr. Brown’s leadership reflects the historic role of the Black church: not only as a place of worship, but as a center for organizing, resistance, healing, courage, and justice.

Rev. Haynes also issued a timely call for a Third Reconstruction as efforts continue to dismantle the civil rights progress achieved through the struggles of the 1950s and 1960s.

To our local churches: our faith must have social consequences. The work does not stop at the church doors.

What a powerful evening celebrating 90 years of leadership, advocacy and service by the NAACP Youth & College Division at the Juanita Jackson Mitchell Gala! ✊🏾🔥

Hosted by actor Michael Rainey Jr., the evening honored the young leaders, advisors, organizers and advocates who continue to prove that young people are not simply the future of the movement. They are leading the movement right now.

One of the most powerful moments of the evening was hearing from Chairman Fred Hampton Jr., who challenged us to move beyond simply remembering history and begin living it through action.

He reminded us that:

✊🏾 Everything is political, including our food, fashion, music, schools, neighborhoods and everyday lives.

✊🏾 We must turn our communities into classrooms, study our people and connect political education to the places where people already gather.

✊🏾 We cannot dismiss the potential of our young people. We must recognize their energy, organize it and help develop it.

✊🏾 Differences among the people can be reconciled, but the conflict between the people and systems of oppression cannot simply be ignored.

✊🏾 We must stop treating movements like museum pieces. A movement is a living commitment that each generation must strengthen and carry forward.

Chairman Hampton also reminded us that before his father became Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton Sr. organized through the Junior NAACP. Even as a teenager, his leadership and organizing potential were already being recognized.

That history matters.

The evening made one message unmistakably clear: young people do not need permission to lead. They need mentorship, opportunity, political education and adults who are willing to work beside them, not stand in their way.

Congratulations to every award recipient and to the entire NAACP Youth & College Division on 90 remarkable years. The baton is not being passed someday. It is being passed right now.

Day 2 of the 117th NAACP Convention delivered a powerful charge from NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson:

“All roads lead to November.”

He reminded us that democracy has not always been kind to us and has often tried to exclude and exploit us. Yet, we remain among this nation’s most loyal and dedicated citizens, repeatedly called upon to help save its democracy.

Now is not the time to lean away from one another. We must lean toward each other, put aside minor grievances, and focus on the greater fight ahead.

Our power is in our vote, our unity, and our willingness to show up.

We cannot return to what was, because what was never worked for everyone. Together, we must build the democracy we deserve.

We are all we’ve got. Peace and power. ✊🏾🗳️

⚖️ When our rights are under attack, somebody has to be ready to fight back.

Today’s Charles Hamilton Houston Legal Advocacy Training Institute panel featured Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Washington Attorney General Nicholas Brown, moderated by NAACP General Counsel Kristen Clarke.

They tackled voting rights, unlawful executive orders, ICE accountability, birthright citizenship, and protections for immigrant families.

One point from Keith Ellison hit hard: the threat to democracy is not somewhere in the future. It is happening now, and we must respond accordingly.

Our constitutional rights do not defend themselves. Rights on paper mean nothing without people willing to stand up, speak out, and take the fight to court. ✊🏾⚖️

Billy Porter showed us what it means to LIVE OUT LOUD! 🔥

During today’s fireside chat with Jasmine Simpkins at the NAACP Convention, Billy spoke about books, history, identity, joy, healing, and the courage to tell our own stories.

He shared how writers like James Baldwin and Toni Morrison helped him better understand himself and the world around him. Speaking openly from his experience as a Black q***r man, he reminded us to know our history, live in our truth, and stop asking permission to be who we are.

Billy also echoed the words of Fannie Lou Hamer:

“Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.”
