All footage is public domain courtesy of the Tennessee Department of Transportation. "901 TDOT Rewind" is the face of a developing, community-driven project to record TDOT SmartWay cameras in Shelby County and save critical video evidence of major incidents that occur along I-40, I-240, I-55 and Highway 385 (aka Bill Morris Parkway). The Tennessee Department of Transportation does not archive foot

age from its SmartWay cameras. A TDOT spokesperson provided the following statement when asked why:

"The Smartway traffic cameras are intended for real-time monitoring and traffic management, not for archival purposes. Recording and storing continuous video would require significant storage infrastructure and resources, which may not be cost-effective or necessary for TDOT’s mission." This project aims to tackle these barriers, so that law enforcement agencies and victims can have video evidence that otherwise is not archived.

PROGRESS REPORT 🔴 Many states record their traffic cameras and archive footage for a period of time, but Tennessee is not one of them. TDOT SmartWay cameras are designed for live viewing only.

Here's a map of the 41 TDOT SmartWay cameras that this page is rolling on as of Friday, December 19, 2025. The purple markers indicate cameras that are next in line to be recorded, but are not being archived right now. (There are more SmartWay cameras that are not shown on this custom map.)

The goal is to roll on all 100+ Shelby County-area SmartWay cams, but the resources required to record these cameras 24/7 are extensive.

While this project is a work in progress, the purpose is to provide victims and law enforcement with evidence of critical traffic incidents that otherwise aren't archived by the state.

Video evidence can be the missing piece needed to resolve an insurance battle or criminal investigation. These cameras can show who is at fault in an accident and more. The mission is to convince state leaders that camera archiving is worth investing in.
