We all know that time spent in nature can benefit our mental health, but did you know that it's particularly beneficial for disadvantaged children?

A new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign demonstrates the equigenic nature of, well, nature on children. Time spent in green spaces provides greater benefits to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds than to their advantaged counterparts.

To put it simply, a green playing field is more level for all children. They all benefit from time spent in nature, but those with more disadvantages benefit more.

It turns out that adding trees to a schoolyard can improve reading and math skills, behavior, and social interactions. Further proof that trees are heroic.

Cookouts mean meals that are raw in the middle and charred on the edges. It's a scouting tradition.

These Girl Scouts cooking over an open fire in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in 1956 demonstrate that tradition. They don't look like they're eagerly anticipating dinner. Do you know what else hasn't changed? Spending time in the forest is great for children and adults.

Our forests provide essential recreation, as well as wood products and jobs. Time among trees lowers stress, eases anxiety, and improves health. Trees are our past and our future.
