Old: trees β†’ pulp + black liquor

New: trees β†’ pulp + lignin + organic acids

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are developing a modular process to help pulp mills create new revenue from the black liquor they produce.

While studying ways to improve the energy efficiency of pulp production, scientists found they could do more than reduce the water content of black liquor. They could produce multiple products, turning kraft pulp mills into kraft biorefineries.

Best of all, the changes can be implemented gradually within existing plants. Sustainability increases, jobs are retained, and the pulp and paper industry could see a big boost.

Got Daniel Powter's song "Bad Day" stuck in your head, too?

Dick Tuttle was having a bad day when he snagged his parachute on a lodgepole pine in 1939. Fortunately, Forest Guard Francis Luskin was there to help.

It's simple, really. Urban foresters protect and care for trees in urban settings, helping keep communities greener and healthier.

These trees aren't just in parks. They're also found in greenways, promenades, and tree boxes. They're vital to the physical and emotional health of our communities.

If you love trees and value community engagement, this might be the forestry career for you.

Mosquitoes are more than an annoyance. They spread diseases that can be fatal, from dengue and malaria to West Nile virus.

Citronella has been an alternative to DEET-based repellents for years. Now, scientists in China are testing May Chang (Litsea cubeba) as another alternative.

Test samples have been small, and field studies need to be completed, but a new plant-based repellent may soon be in our future.

May Chang may be a shrub or a tree, but the trees are claiming credit.

Well, that's one way to answer the old philosophical question. If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?

You'll know for sure if you put a microphone in front of it.

This photo shows two loggers using a crosscut saw while standing on springboards. No, they're not the type of springboards used in diving, thank you.

There's no explanation for why three men are standing in front of a microphone in the middle of the forest. Perhaps they were philosophers.

Palm trees are more than just another pretty frond.

They give us food: dates, coconuts, and acai berries. They're also the source of the coir in your welcome mat, the carnauba wax in your lip balm, and the raffia in your sunhat.

They also store carbon, contribute to biodiversity, and regulate humidity.

In short, they're MVTrees - most valuable trees.
