The Girls of Leadership is an educational and creative program that develops intellectual, creativity, and leadership skills. This is done through hands on experiential learning. Our mission is to spark creativity, build leaders, and ignite change in girls ages 6-10.

Grandma Joyce’s Reading Tip — Step 4

Now it’s time to focus on the vowel sounds: A, E, I, O, U.

Vowels are important because you need a vowel letter to create words. Practice each sound with your child, say the sound together, and move at your child’s pace.

Small, consistent practice helps children begin connecting sounds to words — and that’s where reading starts to come together.

Now that you know what your child already knows, it’s time to practice letter sounds!

Start with just 4 letters per day and move at your child’s pace. Review the sounds together, repeat as needed, and celebrate their progress!

Remember, learning to read is not a race. Small steps build strong readers!

Did you know?

The short vowel sounds — A, E, I, O, U — are very important when children begin building and reading words.

Once your child knows their letter names and sounds, learning the short vowel sounds helps them begin putting sounds together to make words.

STEP 2: LET’S LEARN OUR LETTERS!

Now that you have completed the assessment, it’s time for Step 2!

For this step, grab some flashcards and write one letter of the alphabet on each card, from A through Z.

Start with just 4 letters a day.

Show your child each letter and help them learn to recognize and name the letter. Don’t rush! We want our children to become comfortable and confident recognizing their letters before moving ahead.

Grandma Joyce’s Tip:
When introducing the letters, start with the lowercase letters first. Once your child begins recognizing those letters, you can work on connecting them with their uppercase partners.

Keep practicing the same four letters until your child is becoming comfortable recognizing them. Remember, we’re not racing—we’re building a strong reading foundation one step at a time!

Grandma Joyce’s Reading Tip Step 1 continues!

Step one is simple: find out what your child already knows.

Before you begin teaching, take time to assess whether your child can recognize their uppercase and lowercase letters and whether they know the letter sounds.

As you do this, don’t help them — just listen, observe, and make note of what they already know.

Remember: this is not a test, it’s a starting point.
It helps you know where to begin and how to support your child with confidence.
