The Women's Advocacy Center

The Women's Advocacy Center Our mission is to empower and support survivors and victims of domestic abuse.

Our overall approach focuses on:

Assisting - Addressing the critical needs of women transitioning out of abusive relationships, requires delivering services that make a real difference. Our program addresses need such as, childcare assistance, assistance securing employment, assistance in overcoming food shortages and housing instability, and assistance with minor car repairs or transportation to

and from a job. Investing - By intentionally investing in the overall well-being of our clients, we seek to understand each woman’s most pressing concern. With this understanding, we can then partner with her to develop a detailed plan that helps her move towards a more hopeful future. Mentoring – Through one-on-one mentoring, we foster the development of healthy and safe relationships. This requires committed volunteers, who consistently engage with our clients as a listening ear, a confidante, a prayer partner, or an encouraging friend during difficult days.

This is a shout out to the women of the Alpha Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., who came out to support our work during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The sorority, which has been serving communities since 1939, enthusiastically joined The Women's Advocacy Center in serving ladies living in Bartlett, Millington, and Northaven who are impacted by abuse, sexual assault, and stalking.

The women of Zeta Phi Beta, pictured below, stocked the newly opened donation center in our North Shelby office. This was a wonderful answer to prayer! A heartfelt thanks to the members who led and participated in this beautiful event. We, at The Women's Advocacy Center, appreciate your generosity to the women and children we serve each day.

Every October, you’ll see purple ribbons. You’ll hear words like “awareness.” But for the women who will walk through our doors this month, October is not symbolic. It’s survival.

This October, at The Women’s Advocacy Center, we are asking you to do more than wear purple. We are asking you to be active. Step into the story of how a life was saved through awareness and action. Action looks like your gift of $175 for a night of safe shelter, or $100 for a month of meals. It looks like someone who volunteers and says to a woman, “You are not alone.” These are practical ways that healing begins.

"Every time, it felt like dying."

Not in a poetic way. In a real, physical way. A tightening in my chest. A weight in my stomach. A grief that curled up inside my ribs and made it hard to breathe.

Because I loved him.

Not the way you’re supposed to love someone. Not safely. But deeply. Desperately. Like a tether I couldn’t cut no matter how many times he burned me.

When people say “just leave,” they don’t see this part. They don’t see the way his hand on my back could make my heart race in two completely different ways.

They don’t know what it’s like to crave someone who also scares you. To mistake the calm between storms for peace.

I kept throwing myself into the flames. And even now, knowing all I know, I still feel that ache in my chest when I think about what we were.

That’s the part no one talks about... how love doesn’t leave just because you do.

Hear from a mom who's "no longer in limbo," thanks to our Food on the Table program:

"Food on the Table has truly been that. It has become a staple in my home and a treat that my children look forward to each month. For me, it has been a life line. There were days when I was waiting on my next paycheck just to buy groceries. I was in limbo, I couldn’t qualify for food stamps but I didn’t have a surplus at the end of the month. Food on the Table filled the gap when child support couldn’t. Food on the Table was a hand up until I became self-sufficient. My children and I are very thankful for this service."

"No one told me how hard it would be after..."

I left. I got out. Packed what I could, grabbed my child, and drove off with shaking hands and no plan. And yet… now, in the quiet, the guilt has moved in where he used to be.

Why didn’t I leave the first time he scared me?
Why did I let my kids see things no child should?
Why did I believe his apologies again and again, thinking this time he meant it?

I look at my sons and wonder what damage was done while I was too afraid to act. I see their flinches, anxiety, the way they watch me so closely now... like they're waiting for something to snap.

I’m free, but I’m not at peace. Because now I have to live with the fact that I knew something was wrong… and I still stayed.

Not because I didn’t care. But because I hoped. Hoped he’d change. Hoped it would get better. But now I carry that hope like a weight.

And no one told me how heavy it would be... to survive and still feel like it’s my fault.
