Shelby Debate Society Better students and community through debate! It aims to continue growing until every high school in the district participates.

The Shelby Debate Society brings together an active community of students, teachers, administrators, and community leaders devoted to improving the education and life skills of youth in Shelby County. Debate helps to close the achievement gap and to prepare low-income youth to achieve in school, succeed as adults, and ultimately strengthen their communities. ss to this life-changing activity through the Shelby Debate Society (SDS)

SDS is a partnership between Shelby County Schools and a private group of civic and business leaders organized as the Shelby Debate Advisory Board. The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL), the national leadership organization of the urban debate movement, helped to form this partnership and will guide its success through proven expertise and strategy. SDS launched as the Memphis Urban Debate League in March 2008 and already enjoys participation by students and teachers from 27 SCS high schools and 7 SCS middle schools. With debate, Shelby County youth will have an opportunity to learn the literacy, critical thinking, and life skills they need to succeed in college and beyond. Similar to their more advantaged suburban and private school counterparts, minority and low-income urban students all have the potential to lead successful, fulfilling lives. SCS will provide a life-changing activity for Shelby County youth to access that potential.

***2014-15 Policy Debate Topic Announced***

After a nationwide vote, the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) has announced the 2014-15 Policy Debate topic:

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its non-military exploration and/or development of the Earth’s oceans.

We will begin discussions and production of the 2014-15 core files later this semester to use for instruction at our June 23 - 27 Summer Debate Institute.

Debaters lets debate:
" Lifting sanctions would be a victory not for Fidel Castro, but for the power of free people to spread liberty. As Griswold argued, “commercial engagement is the best way to encourage more open societies abroad.” Of course, there are no guarantees. But lifting the embargo would have a greater likelihood of success than continuing a policy which has failed. Some day the Cuban people will be free.
