Keesha Warrior Princess

Keesha Warrior Princess We strive to save lives by increasing early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer - in women 20-40 Amy Albert was Keesha's best friend since middle school.

Our Story

Our nonprofit is named after the original , Keesha Furniss. Diagnosed with stage-4 metastatic breast cancer at the young age of 30, she battled for four years before the disease took her life in November 2017. She told she realized she missed many of the key signs and asked us to share her story with the world - to save other young women from the pain, suffering, and eve

n death associated with this horrible disease. Keesha's parents, Bob and Susan Furniss launched the nonprofit in honor of their daughter's life and battle - to increase conversations about the often silent killer in women her age. Our board members are also strong advocates for the mission. And, Chris Thompson is a long-time family friend. By engaging with hundreds of friends and family around the world, Keesha Warrior Princess is hoping to bring our message to a global audience.

"The University of Southern California graduate continues, "One of my key messages is being familiar with your body, getting to know what normal lumps and bumps you have, and getting stuff checked out. So I think my friends hear me talk about it 24/7.""

I had the honor of being a guest on the Breast Cancer Conqueror podcast last month. They are a fantastic organization with a lot of great content!

I'm always thankful for the opportunity to tell Keesha's story so that other women see the need for early detection.

You can access more resources on our website and purchase my book about Keesha's fight, "On To Blue," here: ontobluebook.com.

You’ve probably been inundated with requests for GivingTuesday opportunities. I know I have. Here are three of many reasons to make Keesha Warrior Princess a part of your End-of-Year Giving.

1. Help us raise funds to engage more women about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. We continue to distribute breast self-check reminder cards through our many non-profit and business partners.

2. Help support other local nonprofits that offer healthcare services to underserved communities in the Memphis area. If you live in Memphis and cannot afford a clinic visit, please send us a direct message for a referral to this fantastic organization.

3. If you knew our sweet Keesha, you would know that she impacted so many people in her short life. We started KWP to honor her life and her fight - and to fulfill her wish that we "tell her story to ensure other women don't follow the same path" she followed.

This is significant and confirms the need for our message and mission even more.

"Researchers found that 20–24 percent of all breast cancers diagnosed over an 11-year span occurred in women between 18 and 49 years old."

Newsweek spoke with experts who said that women under 50 make up about a quarter of breast cancer cases in America.

This is a great article. #6 is especially important!

Delayed Screening, Gaps in Diagnosis

“Mammograms are generally not recommended in women younger than 40 unless they fall into high-risk categories. As a consequence, most young women are diagnosed at a late stage when clinical symptoms become significant- by this time, cancer may have progressed. A growing number of proponents are, therefore, calling for more personalized screening protocols based on individual risk profiles as opposed to age alone.”

Breast cancer is no longer just a concern for older women—cases among women in their 20s and 30s are steadily rising. This guide explores seven crucial factors behind the trend and what women younger need to know for early detection and prevention.

Early last month, a young woman reached out to us to inquire about an opportunity to help further the mission of Keesha Warrior Princess. She was calling on behalf of a group of five women taking a Leadership class at the University of Memphis. Their final class assignment was to use the tools and knowledge they had learned in class to work with a non-profit in a "real-life" situation.

We have been working on a NEW program, the Warrior Princess Ambassador Program. It allows volunteers to take our message and mission to new audiences. We provided them with all the items needed to create a table pop-up on campus, to share the mission, distribute cards, and engage new young women about the need for early detection through self-checks and annual healthcare visits.

The team was terrific to work with! They went above and beyond the initial scope, actually doing TWO events! We loved that they received many positive responses and, most importantly, many questions from participants. Here's to hoping their professor gave them an 'A" on the project, because they deserved it!

If you would like to host an Ambassador Program at your church, company, school, or event, just let us know. We can help you engage to save lives!
