On May 4, 1867, the North American newspaper published a report regarding the Alabama State Colored Convention, which convened on May 2 and 3 of the same year. This gathering brought together delegates representing the interests and rights of freedmen across the state. The reports highlighted troubling accounts from these delegates, who expressed that, in numerous instances, the freedmen had been deceitfully deprived of their hard-earned wages. Many recounted experiences of egregious mistreatment in the various districts they represented.
