Day 3 of 40 •

Devotional
Section 1: How it Got to Us
The first portion of this passage follows the theme of this first week of passages: God’s word is reliable because it is from Him. Something to note, however, is the last phrase at the end. Paul explains that the word of God is at work in those who believe – this is a good self-check for us as Christians. If we truly believe God and believe in God, is His word at work in us? In other words, are we doing the things that He says are good for us to do and are we avoiding those things that He says will ultimately be harmful?

If we take an honest look at our lives and really our decisions are made based on how we feel, not what God's Word says, we aren't actually living our lives in obedience. Following Jesus takes everything - are you willing to obey God even when it gets difficult?

Practical Steps: Repeat this statement before you begin your day today: “Today, with every action, thought, and motive, I will honor You.” Then, check every action, thought, and motive against that criteria: “Does it honor God?”

"The Other Six Days"
Day 2 of 40 •
Devotional
Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us
Peter helps to answer that age-old question about the Bible here: ‘did humans write it, or did God literally write it with a pen and paper?’ It explains that, though humans wrote the Bible, their will had nothing to do with the inspiration behind it. In other words, God’s Spirit led them to write what they did, and therefore, we can trust that God would not have led them wrong. After all, if God is all-powerful, why would He allow mere humans to write down things that weren't true of Him and then let them succeed in convincing the world that they were the words of God?

On top of that, it's hard to believe that humans simply writing down this 'made up story' of God would have such an incredible accuracy rate across thousands of years: the Bible is the must trustworthy transcript rate in the known world today.

Practical Steps: Ask God to strengthen our belief that the Bible was inspired by Him, and because of that, we can trust that He knew and still knows what He’s doing.

Day 1 Devotional
Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us
The statement Paul is making here is powerful. He makes it clear that we can’t simply pick and choose which Bible passages are true and which are not – ALL of scripture is useful for teaching and training us to be righteous. Alongside of this idea is the concept that the Bible was written to equip us, not just to be read and forgotten – it has the power to change our lives and gives us the power to change the world! However, if we simply read the words and don't let them change our lives or obey them, it will have a similar effect to reading a phone book. God's Word is meant to be alive and active in our lives: it's incredibly challenging at times but so worth it.

So if you're doing this Bible plan with no real intention of being changed by God's Word, you might as well stop this plan now. But if you're willing to jump in, be changed, and have God begin to use you to change the world, start waking up 20 minutes early every morning and using this devotional to get started!

Practical Steps: Write down this verse, and as we go through this devotional, make it a point to read this aloud prior to each day’s devotional to remind our souls that God’s word is powerful. Ask specifically that God would help us to understand what the usefulness is behind each of the verses that will be studied throughout the rest of this devotional.
