Team 533, the Lindenhurst Psicotics, spent an afternoon at the Lindenhurst Memorial Library this week running Bridge Builders, a free STEM Camp session for students in grades 2 through 5. The session filled to capacity.
The lesson was designed and taught by the team's own students. Campers started by comparing a cube and a pyramid to see which shape holds up under pressure, learned how compression and tension act on a structure, and then broke into small groups to design and build bridges of their own. Team 533 students worked alongside each group throughout the build. Every bridge was then put through three stress tests, simulating high winds, an earthquake, and added weight, and most of them held.
There is a lot of value in a program like this. It costs families nothing, asks no prior experience of the kids who show up, and gives them a real afternoon of engineering they might not encounter otherwise. It also gives Team 533 students the chance to teach what they know to the next group coming up behind them, which is one of the best parts of what this team does.
