This is what a child looks like 3 days before being diagnosed with cancer.
He had been fighting a fever for a couple of weeks, but Motrin did the trick every time to perk up his spirits; you’d never know he was sick. Twice, the doctors determined it was just a virus.
I vividly remember giggling in this moment, as our son began ROARING in the mirror like his favorite Avenger, the Hulk. BUT that moment of joy was fleeting as an image of him roaring - BALD - flashed before my eyes, and I knew.
I immediately called the doctor to request the results of his recent bloodwork. They sent them over and transferred me to a nurse who gave me the run around, saying they were waiting for a referral to a “hematologist” (side note - this is a combined specialty of Hematology/Oncology). I cut straight to the point and asked “Does the doctor think he has leukemia?”. She was shocked and could no longer hide the truth of their suspicion.
As we waited for the appointment, I woke up in the middle of the night and franticly took his temperature, which read 107F (that’s not a typo), as he sleepily muttered, “Momma help me”. Those words still haunt me. We bolted to the ER and were told he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The world of our once naive, adventurous, young family was turned upside down and changed forever.
This is why Kiger Cares. This is why we want childhood cancer to hear us ROAR!! Every families’ story is different, but there is one constant across all childhood cancer diagnoses; it is an instant indescribable, unimaginable heartbreak.
Please help us to raise awareness and support the families with children still being diagnosed everyday.
