Who are we?

The Comissão N. Senhora dos Milagres, Costa Leste EUA 2026 was founded by Jorge & Sandra Gomes, local Serreta natives, and is comprised of over 25 native “Serretenses” who reside in the Greater Boston area. As we came together as a committee, we also founded this Grupo of Amigos to honor all our “Serretenses” from around the world, whose heart ❤️ is always with Serreta.

We are working together to raise funds for our Church’s Altar restoration project and will be hosting a Fundraiser Event in March 2026. Once our beautiful Altar is restored, it will bring the vision for this sacred space back to life!

MEET OUR CHEF!

Chef Val Vieira will be creating & preparing our delicious Benefit Event dinner on March 7, 2026!

Val is known for his lifelong love for food & creating innovative food with a focus on farm-to-table ingredients, global flavors and twists on Portuguese traditional dishes.

Inspired by years of experience at the formerly acclaimed ATASCA restaurant in Cambridge MA, Val contributes his passion and creativity for food in every dish. You can often find him in the kitchen, but his best sous chef is always by his side: his loyal dog, Lucy!

Lucy’s presence reminds Val of the simple joy of good food and the importance of sharing it with loved ones. We look forward to sharing this simple joy with ALL of you as well on March 7, 2026!!

Thank YOU to everyone who visited us at our Christmas Decor table this past weekend at St. Anthony’s (Cambridge MA) Holiday Bazaar! We are grateful for your support!! All proceeds raised were donated to our upcoming Benefit Event in March!

Agradecemos a todos que nos visitaram em nossa mesa de decoração Natalina na Igreja de S. António este último fim de semana. Somos gratos pelo seu apoio e todos os fundos foram doados para o nosso próximo evento beneficente em Março 2026.

Serreta’s 1,500ft altitude, rugged terrain, exposure to southwestern winds and far distance from other village settlements led to it becoming the last village to be occupied in the 17th century. Western farmers occupied the unused lands previously to raise cattle and sheep but the conditions were inadequate and the animals raised there were considered worst and weakest on the island. Yet over time, and at present day, what this small village, (with a population of a little over 300 people) lacks in size, makes up for in resilience.

The herds of cattle and sheep, once known as the weakest, became forged by the range and grazed the rugged grounds with strength and resilience. As a Terceirense, we know the limits to resilience. As a Serretense, we know we are built to thrive amidst the limits.

Our Church of N. Senhora dos Milagres remains a true example of such survival ❤️.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles (N. Senhora dos Milagres) located in Serreta, on the island of Terceira, is one of the most beloved pilgrimage sites in the Azores. Its origins date back to the late 17th century, when local devotion grew around miraculous legends involving the Virgin Mary.

This Sanctuary continues to be the center of all activities for thousands of devotees who come from all over the world to participate in one of the most important religious and cultural Azorean celebrations. An annual procession and weeklong festivities mark this pilgrimage as a central cultural celebration.

Each September, those who have prayed to the Virgin Mary and had their heartfelt wishes granted, make their pilgrimage as homage. Thousands and thousands of pilgrims walk long distances all across the island to reach the Sanctuary– some walking nearly 20 miles, from one end of the island to the other, and arrive in Serreta with rosaries held tightly in hand and some walking barefoot to display their humility and reverence as they carry out their spiritual journey of devotion.

The 1st festival of Our Lady of Miracles was inaugurated on September 11, 1764, and for over 260 years, Serreta has been known for connecting family, faith, believers and non-believers. “Serreta” has become the local “code” word and continues to unify their local pilgrims with each and everyone of us, who like them, are carrying out our own journey, even if we are halfway around the world.
