American Legion Post 147

Members of Medford American Legion Post 147 and VFW Post 5729 gathered today to honor another veteran who has passed away. The honor guard presents the American flag and branch of service flag, provides a final hand salute to the deceased, fires three r***e volleys that represent a final farewell, respect for the fallen service member, and closure for the family, and plays taps. The rounds are blanks fired into the air, the spent casings are recovered and presented to the next of kin, along with the folded flag and these words: "On behalf of the President of the United States, the [United States Army / United States Marine Corps / United States Navy / United States Air Force / United States Space Force / United States Coast Guard], and a grateful Nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service." This picture reflects the honor guard saluting during the playing of taps. This is one of the most solemn ceremonies that our veteran organizations conducts and it is an honor for us to do so. Our honor guard has an average age over 70 years old, and these men and women will always do their best to do this. Tonight, October 7th, 2026, members of the Medford VFW Post 5729, American Legion Post 147 and VFW Post 5729 Auxiliary paid respect to the Gulf War and Global War on Terrorism Veterans of Taylor County. On June 23, 2026, the Taylor County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution proclaiming October 7th as the Gulf War and Global War on Terrorism Veterans Appreciation Day. Past commander of the Wisconsin Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ron Ramos visited as guest speaker and Post 5729 VFW commander Nick Lemke offered remarks honoring the service and sacrifice of the veterans who served in these wars and continue to serve today, as well as the family members and loved ones who supported them. The remarks were followed by a reading of the resolution, and then a moment of silence, followed by three r***e volleys and the playing of taps to honor those who were lost in these conflicts. The ceremony was followed by pizza, cake, and camaraderie.

MASH students and area veterans cleaned up Flag Field in Medford today. Approximately 50 students with school staff of Alaric Huls, Kyle Ranum and Cullin Peterson did another great job cleaning up the Flag Field, KIA Memorial and the Wall area. Big thank you to Jake Sackmann from J&J Landscaping for the clean-up preparation before everyone arrived and guidance as to what to do. And to Corey Nazar for coming year after year to help us. And, of course, to the veterans who helped supervise: Bruce Emmerich, Bronk Donbroski, Ed Hemmer, Billy Hartman, Bill Vach, Roger Emmerich, Roger Neubauer and Susan Gregori.
