Important information for all horse owners!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has provided an important update on New World Screwworm which has been detected in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. Read the full press release here: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/news/agency-announcements/usda-confirms-presence-new-world-screwworm-united-states

General information about New World Screwworm (NWS) can be found in the text below and in the attached infographic.

The adult screwworm fly is about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger), with orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along its back. It gets its name from the behavior of its larvae (maggots) as they burrow (screw) into the wound, feeding as they go. The maggots (larvae) cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts’ tissue with sharp mouth hooks. The wound can quickly become enlarged and deeper as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue.

Because they feed on live flesh, NWS maggots may burrow deep into wounds or openings, while other species of maggots may appear around the outer surface of the wound. In addition, even the smallest wounds have the potential to attract flies, so it is imperative that you keep a close eye on your animals for any signs of wounds.

Lastly, NWS infestations are a reportable disease! Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to a local accredited veterinarian, your State Animal Health Official, or a USDA veterinarian.

Ginger Hipp – Marsh Tacky Horse Association: https://marshtacky.info
Ginger Hipp is a dedicated horsewoman, breeder, and educator specializing in the rare Carolina Marsh Tacky. Based in rural Georgia, Ginger raises and shows these historic horses, preserving their legacy while teaching ethical horsemanship. A firm believer in the respectful treatment of horses, she emphasizes patience, trust, and an understanding of each horses individual nature.
Beyond her work with Marsh Tackies, Ginger also breeds miniature donkeys, adding another dimension to their love for equines. Manzanita Farm serves as a place of learning and connection, where they teach others both young and old about responsible horsemanship, from handling well-trained mounts to working with green horses just starting their journey.
Currently, Ginger is writing a memoir about her deeply personal journey with Mercy, a PasoFino mare who challenged her in unexpected ways. Initially reluctant to take Mercy in, she soon realized there was something different about her, something that would forever change her perspective on horses, training, and trust. Her memoir delves into the struggles, triumphs, and the profound lessons Mercy taught her about letting go.
Through her work with Marsh Tackies, her writing, and her lesson program, Ginger is commitment to helping others honor the unique spirit of these horses and share the beauty of the Equine.

So honored!

Congaree: The Little Black Mustang From Arapaho Creek wins 1st Place in Equine Fiction in the American Horse Publications 2025 Awards!

The judge's comments were the icing on the cake!

"This is an absolutely delightful book. It has a great storyline, is educational and the illustrations are gorgeous. How lovely to include the information on Wellness Through Mustangs and The Marley Project; it seems that could be an entire additional book. The way the informational text is set off from the general text is helpful. Although it seems to be aimed at younger readers with the accompanying coloring and activity books, grownups will enjoy reading it as well."
