The monitoring season has concluded for the fawn survival study and here are our findings! πŸ¦ŒπŸ”

☠️ Of the 103 fawns collared this summer in southwestern Minnesota, 66 have died to date, which is roughly 40% summer survival. The leading causes of death this year were predators (primarily coyotes), starvation/exposure and drowning.

β›ˆ This year was the lowest summer survival rate for our fawn study, with the first three years (2021–2023) ranging from 51-77%. The low survival rate was largely due to the unprecedented spring rains during the critical fawning period.

🐾 Predators are a natural part of a deer’s life history. Deer have adapted alongside predators for thousands of years and have maintained a delicate balance to create healthy populations on both sides. Outside factors, like weather and changing habitats, can throw this out of balance.

🌱 Based on our fawn survival study, individuals interested in deer management for southern Minnesota should focus on providing quality cover for fawns and their mothers. This will allow fawns to better hide from predators until they are old enough to outrun them.
