So those in chess for a while do know that brick and mortar chess centers here in RGV typically do not last. So why do we work so hard for one and what makes us think we will be different?
The answer is relatively simple. Reason centers have not lasted is overhead. Generating enough money to pay the bills. So you would need a supplemental income to help cover costs. One could do coffee shop or a cafe, but the problem with that is while it increases revenue it also dramatically increases overhead.
So the question is how can one generate income to cover overhead, without dramatically increasing over head. That’s were being a 501(c)(3) comes in.
As a 501(c)(3) we have access to multiple grants. These grants would help cover overhead. The trick is getting these grants.
One thing grant committees look at is number of people served. The more people and kids we serve, the more likely it is to get a grant.
The reason our board volunteers their time to help schools is to increase the number we serve. Our goal isn’t just to just have everyone volunteer their time. Our goal isn’t just to open a chess club.
We are building to create a full learning center. With afterschool tutoring, homework assistance and of course chess. And to have grant and federal funding to support this.
A place where kids can go after school to get help, while also saving parents money. Somewhere Valley chess coaches can go to hold lessons and not have to do them in a public library. Have summer camps or events.
This is what we are building…. We are not looking at the short term temporary benefits, but instead we are building something for the children’s future.
Everyone who has supported us early on, we thank you. Anyone who wants to get involved in building this, we welcome you.
We have already made our first moves. Will you make yours?
