May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. This is a time to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, experiences, and contributions of AANHPI communities across our campuses, schools, and communities.

On behalf of the OACAC AANHPI Special Interest Group, we recognize and appreciate the students, counselors, admission and enrollment professionals, college access advocates, and educators who continue working to support and empower future generations.
As professionals in admission counseling and student support, we know the importance of creating spaces where students feel seen, heard, and encouraged throughout their educational journey. This month serves as an opportunity to reflect, learn, celebrate, and continue building meaningful connections within our profession and beyond.

Thank you to everyone who helps uplift and support AANHPI students and colleagues each day. We’re grateful for this community and look forward to continuing this work together.

Happy AANHPI Heritage Month!

— Cassie Cunningham & Brenda Gerhardt, Co-Chairs, OACAC AANHPI SIG

Maintain open and honest communication with high schools to support students effectively. For instance, provide clear feedback on why certain applicants were not admitted, which can help schools better prepare future applicants.

As we welcome the Lunar New Year, the OACAC AANHPI Special Interest Group would like to extend warm wishes to our colleagues and communities celebrating this meaningful time of renewal, reflection, and hope.

In our work, we know that each new year brings fresh opportunities to guide, support, and uplift the students and families we serve. The Lunar New Year is a reminder of the importance of community, perseverance, and new beginnings, which are values that are at the heart of college admission counseling.

Thank you for the care, dedication, and encouragement you provide to students every day. May the new year bring continued inspiration, growth, and success for you and those you support.

Happy Lunar New Year from the OACAC AANHPI SIG!
