Martinsville Shaves for the Brave

Martinsville Shaves for the Brave Head shaving community fundraiser for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

Martinsville Shaves for the Brave is in need of a planning committee. I have found myself overextended this year and was not able to schedule an event for the first of June like we have been accustomed to. I would like to see this event still happen this year and continue annually. If you’re interested in helping please reach out to me. Thank you!

June 3rd, 2023 was a super hot, sunny Saturday, but a great day to raise money for children's cancer research. Twenty-three individuals shaved their heads at The Main Connection in Martinsville, IN in solidarity with children enduring cancer treatments. Five Shavees couldn't make it to the event, but still plan to shave their heads. Their pictures will be added when available. In all, $5,700 was raised for the St. Baldrick's Foundation and we couldn't be happier about that!

The event was organized by Bethaney Latham, but only possible with the support from all workers, fundraisers, and donors. Thank you to 2023's #1 Shavee Recruiter: Savannah Griswold; Barbers: Hilary Harvey-Singleton, Joni Neely, & Jesse Dunn; Porch Time's Kevin Coryell and Cory & Michelle Baker; Registration & Treasurers: Becky Swinney & Liz Ferguson; Devin Latham for making LOTS of FREE snow cones; Family Zone workers: Shannon Duncan, Jay & Rebekah Ferguson; Set-up/Tear-down crew: Matt Latham, Luke Jackson, Mike Myntti, & lots of names listed above; MHS basketball, cheer, and football teams for their donation; Hometown Nutrition for accepting donations & hanging fundraising charms (see pic); The Main Connection's Doug & Paula Molin for the venue space - it was perfect!

If you would like more information about this event, message us. Please consider signing up as a Shavee or a Fundraising Participant next year. With your help, researchers will find new cures and save lives, giving hope to kids everywhere.

In January, Callie went to the doctor to check for a possible lazy eye. What was thought to be a small issue led to a CT scan, an MRI, and ultimately a diagnosis of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), Chiari malformation and a fluid-filled cyst in the spinal cord called a syrinx. DIPG is a highly aggressive tumor in the brain stem that accounts for 10% of all childhood central nervous system tumors. Callie is one of approximately 300 children in the US diagnosed with DIPG each year.

Surgery is not an option for many DIPG patients due to its location in the brain stem. Callie completed 30 rounds of radiation and recently became the first patient in the US to participate in a new clinical trial that brings hope to Callie and her family.

She has done exceptionally well with every challenge and just keeps on smiling! She is a bright, spunky 6-year-old who loves gymnastics, singing, and spending time with her family and friends.

“If it wasn’t for childhood cancer research, we would be looking at only months or weeks to spend with our child. Thankfully, we are participating in a trial where we have hope that we will have Callie much longer than the typical life expectancy of 12 months post-diagnosis. Research has given us more time with our precious girl and we hope and pray for a scan one day of “no evidence of disease!” --Callie’s mom.

Research is hope for kids like Callie. Please consider donating to fund lifesaving research: bit.ly/45zLLYB

Look at this! 🤩 We were asked to pick up a donation at MHS for our June 3rd Martinsville Shaves for the Brave event. Never did we think it would be $800! ❤️💙 Martinsville is well known to be a philanthropic community and it is obvious that this culture has been accepted by its youth.

Well done, MHS Cheer, Martinsville High School Football, Men’s Basketball, and Women’s Basketball teams. We thank you and are so proud of you!

Mia Juliet was born on January 2, 2009, a beautiful, healthy bundle of joy. A little over nine months later, on October 17, 2009, she was diagnosed with a rare, high-grade brain tumor, atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor (ATRT) and hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). Over the next two months, Mia had several surgeries to try and extract the tumor as well as treat the hydrocephalus. Multiple rounds of chemotherapy followed.

As is often the case with ATRT, Mia’s cancer spread to her central nervous system throughout her spine. On February 23, 2010, Mia lost her hard-fought battle against this horrible tumor.

Her parents, Wendy and Steve, shared, “Mia was a very strong and very brave little baby and fought an incredible fight. However, because of its rarity, there is very little research or treatment options available for ATRT - especially for children who contract it under the age of 2. In the future, more research needs to be done (and, thankfully, is currently underway) to help other babies/children in the future who are afflicted with ATRT. We are so proud of how she fought her own battle and continue to be inspired by our angel each and every day.”

Why we do what we do

We are dedicated to bridging the funding gap for childhood cancer research. Volunteers raise money and shave their heads in solidarity with the victims of the #1 childhood disease killer - cancer. Currently childhood cancers receive less than 4% of research dollars from the National Institutes of Health. Most other cancer organizations give less than a penny per dollar raised to childhood cancers. Treatment protocols are over 25 years old. Childhood cancer is NOT RARE. Diagnoses are on the rise. Every dollar counts.
