The Longest-serving active-duty Marine in the U.S. Marine Corps.

At 19 years old, Lt. Col. Rhonda C. Martin unintentionally walked into a Marine recruiting office on her way to join the Peace Corps. More than four decades later, she became the longest-serving active-duty Marine in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Martin enlisted in 1983 and served a remarkable 42-year career. She began as an administrative specialist, later served as a drill instructor, and was commissioned as an officer in 1996. Her dedication took her through numerous assignments and leadership roles.

According to a U.S. Marine Corps press release, Lt. Col. Martin is recognized as the longest-serving active-duty Marine. She retired at the end of September 2025 after 42 years of honorable service.
