☕ Bright Futures Marion on the national stage! ☕

Yesterday, our co-founders Julie Coveny and Ruth Hegwood-Mills had the honor of presenting at the Coffee & Connections session hosted by Safe and Sound Schools. They shared Marion’s story with Bright Futures coordinators from across the country.

Their topic is one close to our hearts: how the Bright Futures building came to be.

For two years, the promise to meet a child’s need within 24 hours lived in Facebook posts, church closets, and the back seat of a car. Marion has never lacked generosity. What we lacked was a place.

Then someone asked a better question. A portable classroom at the Math, Science and Technology Magnet campus had reached the end of its classroom life. Instead of disposing of it, could it serve families?

Our Director of Facilities, Liz Wooten (our 2024–25 Volunteer of the Year!), and her crew moved, prepared, and outfitted the space. Inside, you’ll now find:

Commercial washers and dryers, funded through a grant Julie wrote

Shower facilities

Storage for donated goods

A parent resource area

Clean clothes and a hot shower are more than comforts. They help children show up to school ready to learn.

To everyone in Marion who has donated, volunteered, prayed, shared a post, or lent a hand: this building belongs to you. Thank you for making it possible.

**Community Shopper Alert**

Bright Futures Marion would like to thank the community shopper who landed an awesome deal on underwear for kids! Our schools can always use underwear.

These were found at our local Walmart in West Memphis for just $5.00 a box. That equals $1.00 a pair! What a bargain!

A TON OF JEANS… AND A WHOLE LOT OF COMMUNITY LOVE!

Weeks ago, Bright Futures Marion received an incredible donation from a company with local ties who understood what we are all about...... approximately 6,000 pairs of ladies’ jeans!

While we were incredibly grateful for such a generous donation, we quickly realized that BFM simply couldn’t use all of them. So, in true Patriots Helping Patriots fashion, we started looking for other local community partners who could put these jeans to good use.

And that’s exactly what happened!

Ruth Hegwood-Mills and her husband loaded up the BFM truck and delivered jeans to lots of local organizations that were thrilled to receive them! We had local organizations picking them up from us as well!

What started as one incredibly generous donation became an opportunity to bless even more people throughout our community. That’s what community is all about sharing our time, talent and treasures so that what we have can reach those who need it most.

A HUGE thank-you to the generous donor who trusted us with this donation, and to Ruth and her husband for doing the heavy lifting! Thanks also goes out to Mr. Rob, who went on the adventure to help Ruth and Julie pick up the jeans, Ms. Snow who helped organize and pack the jeans for all of the different organizations, the ASU Mid-South baseball team for help with moving boxes around in our building and to several members of our Marion Patriots football team who helped load our truck for delivery.

At Bright Futures Marion, we believe Patriots take care of Patriots. Sometimes, that means finding a new home for a blessing so it can keep blessing others.

That’s the power of community partnership!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

A while back we told you guys about a few shoppers in our community who are always on the lookout for bargains for us. One of these shoppers is Lisa O’Neal. She goes above and beyond for us. These recent purchases were not only bargains; but were purchased with her bonus shopping points that she collected! What a great idea, Lisa!

Sometimes, the things we take for granted like having a working vacuum cleaner are the things that mean the most.

Today, we want to share a thank-you card we received from one of our school nurses who reached out to us. We helped with something that, to many of us, might seem small or ordinary. But for this family, it made a huge difference.

That’s what Bright Futures Marion is all about.

It’s not always about big gestures or big dollar amounts. Sometimes it’s about seeing a need, stepping in, and making sure a family knows they are not alone.

We are so thankful to the Marion couple who helped us meet this need within minutes of seeing our post! The wife was out shopping at Target, the husband saw our post and called his wife and asked her to pick up a vacuum cleaner. Thanks also to our school nurse who thought to follow up with us to share what a difference it made in this family's life.

Patriots take care of Patriots.

No questions asked. No judgment. Just neighbors helping neighbors.

Bright Futures Marion gets national attention!

Communities are often incredibly generous. But generosity has its greatest impact when there’s structure behind it.

Bright Futures Marion faced a challenge many communities would love to have: people wanted to give. The question became how to organize that generosity and make it easier to connect resources with the children and families who needed them.

In this month’s Bright Futures Community Spotlight, I’m sharing how an unused portable classroom became part of the answer — and what Marion’s experience can teach us about putting structure around community giving, building capacity, and making better use of the resources already around us.

One of our Marion High School graduates is out in the world making a difference! Go, Niyah!

As a proud 2025 graduate of Marion High School, it is an honor to continue working alongside Bright Futures Marion, an organization committed to ensuring students have the resources and support they need to succeed. Their mission to meet students’ needs within 24 hours is a powerful example of what can happen when a community chooses to listen, respond, and take action.

Marion will always hold a special place in my heart, and I believe that supporting students means advocating for their well-being, their opportunities, and their future.

As the current Miss Essence, my platform, “Anchored in Guarding My Glow,” encourages young people to protect their mental and emotional well-being, recognize their worth, and confidently advocate for themselves and others. Whether I am serving in Marion or continuing my journey at UCA, I am committed to using my voice and platform to make a meaningful difference.

I will continue to represent Marion and UCA with pride, purpose, and dignity while advocating for stronger support systems that help every student feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed. 💜🧡
