A randomized controlled trial published in World Psychiatry has confirmed that Stanford Neuromodulation Therapy (SNT) can achieve 50% remission rates in patients with treatment-resistant depression, compared to 20.8% with sham stimulation.

What makes this finding particularly significant for the neuroregulation community is the EEG biomarker discovery: frontal beta power decreased significantly following active treatment, and higher pre-treatment left anterior cingulate cortex beta power predicted who would benefit most.

This means we may soon be able to use EEG to identify which patients are most likely to respond to neuromodulation, moving closer to truly personalized brain-based treatment.

What happens when you combine neurofeedback with mindfulness practice? A recent randomized controlled trial set out to answer that question, and the results are worth paying attention to.

The study examined a neurofeedback-assisted mindfulness protocol for anxiety in young adults. By pairing real-time EEG feedback with structured mindfulness training, participants learned to regulate their own brain states more effectively than with either approach alone.

The logic makes sense: mindfulness teaches awareness of internal states, while neurofeedback provides objective, real-time information about those states at the neural level. Together, they create a feedback loop that accelerates the learning process.

For clinicians working with anxiety, this kind of multimodal approach represents an exciting direction. It's not about choosing between interventions. It's about combining them in ways that leverage the strengths of each.

Addiction is, at its core, a brain condition. Disrupted neural circuits involved in reward processing, craving, and executive control drive the cycle of substance use even when someone desperately wants to stop. That's why brain-based interventions are gaining attention in addiction treatment.

A 2025 mini review published in Frontiers in Psychiatry examined the evidence for neurofeedback across substance and behavioral addictions. The findings are encouraging: EEG-based neurofeedback, particularly using the alpha-theta protocol, has demonstrated reductions in craving, anxiety, and relapse rates among individuals with alcohol and substance dependence.

A separate systematic review of 32 studies found improvements in abstinence rates, reduced cravings, and enhanced psychological functioning. More recent research is also exploring neurofeedback applications for opioid use disorder and stimulant addiction with promising early outcomes.

Recovery requires more than willpower. It requires rewiring the brain. Neurofeedback provides a pathway to do exactly that.

We've long known that exercise is good for the brain. But new research reveals something remarkable about what happens in your brain after a workout.

Scientists at UT Southwestern discovered that specialized neurons in the hypothalamus remain highly active for over an hour after exercise ends. These SF1 neurons act as a "master switch" for physical endurance, sending signals that tell the body to adapt and grow stronger.

Here's what's fascinating: without the activity of these neurons, mice failed to show any endurance gains no matter how hard they exercised. When the researchers artificially activated these neurons, the animals gained even more endurance than usual.

For the brain health community, this reinforces what neuroregulation science has long emphasized: the brain isn't just responding to the body. It's actively directing adaptation. Exercise is brain training in the most literal sense.

For families navigating autism spectrum disorder, finding effective interventions that address the full range of challenges can feel overwhelming. New research is shedding light on how neurofeedback may complement existing therapies.

A recent systematic review evaluating neurofeedback for ASD found encouraging results: five studies demonstrated improvements in attention, four showed gains in executive function, and additional research has documented improvements in social responsiveness when neurofeedback was combined with conventional therapy.

A 2025 study specifically found that after 20 sessions of neurofeedback training, children with ASD showed positive changes in both behavior and brain network connectivity, suggesting that the benefits extend beyond symptom management to actual changes in neural organization.

While larger, more rigorous trials are still needed, these findings point toward neurofeedback as a promising complement to behavioral therapies for ASD.

This Memorial Day, we honor those who gave everything in service to our country. We also hold space for the veterans and service members who came home carrying invisible wounds.

PTSD affects an estimated 7% of veterans at some point in their lives, and for many, standard treatments provide only partial relief. That's why research into brain-based approaches like neurofeedback matters so deeply.

The evidence continues to grow. A recent meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials confirmed that neurofeedback significantly reduces PTSD symptoms, with clinically meaningful improvements across standardized measures. For those who have struggled with treatment resistance, neurofeedback offers a different path forward: one that works with the brain's own capacity for self-regulation.

Today we remember. And we continue the work of building better tools for those who served.
