CPR Certified by Janine

CPR Certified by Janine AHA BLS and Heartsaver CPR/First Aid training I started my healthcare career August 2016 with Marathon City Fire Dept as an EMR.

I quickly fell in love with patient care and joined Edgar Fire Dept as an EMT February 2017. I was given the opportunity May 2017 to assist with EMS education at NTC. Patient care and education quickly became a passion for me. I began teaching CPR and babysitting courses with NTC August 2023. My goal when teaching courses is to make the class fun. A light hearted atmosphere is more engaging for st

udents and they retain the material better and longer if the education is enjoyable. I cater the course to your needs, focusing on material that matters to you.

These ladies proudly show off some of the skills they learned at the inaugural CPR & First Aid geared towards Babysitters class!

Future babysitters became certified in the same first aid course day care providers are required to take. We also learned a few babysitting tips and tricks.

Thank you to all who attended. I learned from you as well tonight!

Did you know not all ambulance services can provide the same treatment?

Most rural ambulance services are Basic Life Support (EMTs) while urban areas typically have Advanced Life Support (Paramedics.) Paramedics have additional training as well as a wider range of medications they can give.

BLS ambulances will call for ALS to help with CPR, potential heart attacks, pain management or severe blood loss. They typically don't call ALS for a suspected stroke (more on that in another post.)

So, when you see a second ambulance pull up, it doesn't mean that the patient is worse than when you last saw them. It means EMTs called in the big dog Paramedics to give the patient care beyond the BLS scope.

Updated infant chest compressions:

The two finger technique is no longer recommended. Two thumbs encircling the infant's chest or one handed compressions are the new guidelines for infant CPR or severe choking relief.

Whose safety is #1 during an emergency or first aid situation?

YOUR SAFETY comes first, even if that means leaving an injured person.

When someone needs help, take 30 seconds to examine the scene before entering. Why is that person injured? Are there potential falling hazards, downed power lines or unsafe humans or animals that could cause you harm? If so, stay back and call 911. It's better to have less people in harm's way and you can't help someone if you become injured as well.

Bystanders recognizing the need for CPR and quickly starting quality compressions are the biggest factors in patient outcome.

For every minute the patient's brain is without oxygen, their survival rate decreases 10%.

Let's say EMS arrives within 5 minutes of the patient going into cardiac arrest. If bystanders don't recognize or are unwilling to start CPR, a positive outcome for the patient has already decreased by 50%

YOU can give a person a better chance of surviving cardiac arrest by learning how to do quality CPR.

AHA updates are available.
New care for choking adults and children:
Instead of just doing abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) choking adults and children should receive 5 back slaps followed by 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver.) Continue rotating back slaps and abdominal thrusts until the object is dislodged or the person becomes unresponsive. If they become unresponsive, guide them to the floor and begin CPR and remember to check for the obstructing object before giving breaths.
More updates to come!

Agonal respirations: if you know what they are, they're easy to recognize. They are movements made by the body that LOOK like the person is breathing, but there is NO gas exchange going on (meaning the person is not inhaling oxygen or exhaling carbon dioxide.) Agonal breathing is common when a person first needs CPR.
It's not uncommon for the general public to misunderstand agonal breathing for "real" breathing. They call 911 to say the person is unresponsive but breathing. EMS will quickly be in route but those first few minutes before they arrive are critical for the patient. If a person is unresponsive, check their carotid (neck) for a pulse. If you don't feel one, start quality compressions and don't stop, even if the person has agonal respirations.
