BRING LOVE HOME: IRONWOOD PIG SANCTUARY JOINS NATIONAL MOVEMENT SPOTLIGHTING ANIMAL RESCUE HEROES

More than 85 animal shelters and rescue organizations across the country are participating in a coordinated national campaign transforming compassion into collective action. Ironwood Pig Sanctuary is proud to be part of “Bring Love Home – From Newtown To Your Town,” a national invitation designed to shine a spotlight on animal champions working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of animals.

Launched by the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit organization in Newtown, Connecticut, the campaign works to amplify local rescue efforts, culminating to a larger event, the 10th Annual Catherine’s Butterfly Party on June 6 – a beloved super pet adoption event that will be live streamed nationwide from Newtown, highlighting adoptions happening both locally and across the country.

The heart behind the movement stems from a devoted animal lover named Catherine Violet Hubbard, a six-year-old who lost her life at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. Her mother, Jennifer Hubbard, started the sanctuary in her memory and hosts the annual Butterfly to “bring love home” to all the animals she adored.

“Every year in Newtown, we have over 30 local animal rescues join us for this super pet adoption event that finds homes for hundreds of animals in need,” says Hubbard. “As we prepare to celebrate a decade of “bringing love home,” we really wanted to applaud those animal advocates like Ironwood Pig Sanctuary across the country who work tirelessly to care for animals in need, often with limited resources and little visibility. It’s simply our way of spreading a little extra kindness to fellow animal champions no matter where they live.”

Through a website interactive rescue map, social media highlights and adoption announcements leading up to and including June 6, the campaign aims to bring visibility and awareness to groups like Ironwood Pig Sanctuary here in Tucson, Arizona. In addition, supporters and animal lovers across the nation are encouraged to “bring love home” in their own town by volunteering, adopting, donating, fostering or spreading the word about their favorite pet heroes.

Supporters can participate by:
● Adopting or fostering a pet
● Volunteering with local animal shelters and rescue organizations
● Donating supplies or contributions to support animal care
● Sharing available animals within their networks

🐷 We Need Pig Carriers! 🐷

With over 450 pigs in foster care and around 690 pigs at the sanctuary, we use carriers constantly.

Vet visits, emergency transports, foster moves, spay/neuter outreach, helping community pigs get where they need to go safely… the carriers stay busy. Very busy. Pig Uber is apparently a full-time operation now. 🚐🐽

Transporting pigs is a pretty specific challenge, and many people don’t have the right equipment to do it safely. That means we often help with carriers and transport when pigs need vet care, surgery, or safe movement between homes.

The pigs, being the strong little potatoes they are, are pretty hard on carriers. For safety, we use the hard Plastic Vari Kennels because they hold up the best and are the safest option we’ve found.

Right now, we especially need:

🐷 48” XXL Petmate Vari Kennels

These are expensive, so even donating toward part of one makes a big difference! If you donate money toward a carrier, please write “carrier” in the donation comments so we know to put it toward our pig transport supply fund.

We’re Hiring! 🐷☀️

Summer Toweling Position

$16/hr | Full-time only | 10 AM–6 PM

Join our team at Ironwood Pig Sanctuary and help keep over 600 pigs safe, cool, and cared for during the Arizona summer.

🌡️ What is toweling?

Some of our older pigs, arthritic pigs, heavier pigs, or pigs with chronic health issues struggle to get to pools or wallows to cool themselves down in the summer heat. Your job will be to help prevent overheating by placing cool/ice towels on pigs, helping them get up and out of shelters, and making sure they are cooling down before they show serious signs of heat stress.

🔥 Signs we are trying to prevent:

Heavy breathing/Mouth open breathing
Foaming at the mouth
Rapid snout movement
Lethargy or not wanting to get up

If a pig is already showing these signs, they needed help sooner.
This position is an important part of preventing that.

🧠 Training & Requirements:

No experience needed. All training is hands-on and provided.

Applicants must:

Be comfortable working around large animals

Be reliable and observant

Be willing to work outdoors in the summer heat

Have reliable transportation

Be willing to get up close to pigs, even when they grunt, groan, or complain
Understand that potential for injury is real. Pigs are strong, stubborn, and don’t always cooperate, but we will train you on how to stay safe and confident
Be comfortable helping older pigs who may need a gentle lift, nudge, or extra encouragement to get moving
