We had a truly delightful hour together with Yijia Bu hosting the AAPI Heritage Month Kids Hour at the South Orange Public Library, The Baird, South Orange, NJ.
Through the book “Michelle Yeoh: Breaking Barriers,” the kids learned that dreams are not out of reach. In “Who Stole the Buns,” they learned how to say “buns,” “dumplings,” and “noodles” in Chinese; and in “The Great Race,” they learned about the origins of the Chinese zodiac.
We located the AAPI region on a globe, explored Asian aesthetics through stencils, and matched animals of the zodiac with their oracle bone script symbols. The kids enjoyed discovering that the earliest forms of writing were actually drawings, and the games brought the whole thing to life.
Thank you Yijia and Keisha of SOPL. Hope to see you all next year!
