Wayward Road

Wayward Road We are now a 501c3 Charitable Organization. Wayward Road inc. Something as simple as hugging a chicken can change a person's outlook. Maybe even some true love!

501c(3) Small scale sanctuary for horses and livestock, who will live out their lives in a safe, secure place and may be re-adapted for therapy programs to help people with emotional issues. EIN: 81-2837393
NYS AG Charities Bureau Registration Number: 47-35-76
12/30/2016 - Received Determination of Exemption from Federal Income Tax from IRS, under Section 501c(3). is a horse and livestock rescue,

giving sanctuary to animals that are displaced due to neglect, abuse, misconception of how difficult a pet it was going to be, discarded Easter animals, etc. These animals may be re-adapted for use in on and off-site day programs to help survivors of PTSD, confidence issues, empathy issues, substance abuse, and other emotional or trauma based problems. We are not counselors, but hope to work closely with other existing organizations who deal with people with these issues to develop programs to help them. We do not have a riding program. It will be based on making a trusting connection with another creature, where both human and animal will learn trust, care, and communication. Horse and other animal based therapies have been proven to help. Helping animals so they in turn can help people is the goal here.

I’m not 10 feet away from these two. While Buckwheat has always been relaxed, Whiskers would never lay down, roll or put himself in a vulnerable position with me so close. This is a gift for which I am very grateful. He’s come a long way.

We received our new pony stall yesterday from The Cedar Sheds. They custom build many of our sheds for us. We have to fill this in with a few yards of dirt because of the slope before the ponies can use it, but we highly recommend Thecedarsheds.Com in Riverhead for all your shed needs !

I just had to post these pictures of Whiskers sticking his face in the camera. He’s come such a long way from the impossible to catch, fearful, shy little pony that came to us back in 2016.
This is our 10th year helping these guys. I can’t believe how time has passed so quickly.

Buckwheat received more antibiotics today. He is doing much better and Doc cleared him to go back to his normal, feral state with his buddy, Whiskers. He also got his feets done today, so he’s pretty worn out from everything.
We ordered a new, second, actual stall for their paddock, and removed the cattle panel shelter that was crushed by the snow this year. It’s coming Friday.
Thank you, everyone for your continued support, and special thanks to:
Dr. Ed Schaentzler, EMS Equine for always being there for us.
Dimarco, our farrier, who deals with everyone’s temper tantrums without blinking an eye
Huarcaya of The Cedar Sheds for bringing all our custom shed plans to life.
Phil Holmes for keeping us in good hay , which really helps keep our medical bills to a minimum, while keeping everyone well fed.

Our little Buckwheat kept us busy over the weekend with an infection that was sent out to be cultured, and an unrelated intestinal issue.
Did not eat his dinner Friday night, no p**p production but was trying, no gut sounds, so we thought colic.
Dr. Ed Schaentzler came Saturday and Sunday. Saturday Buck was tubed for colic, given Banamine, antibiotics, and put on lockdown for monitoring. He is not happy.
He is producing a little p**p throughout the day since Saturday evening, drinking and eating handful sized meals three times a day.
Doc thinks it may have been paralytic ileus, which can reverse itself. Please keep Buck in your prayers with fingers crossed that he continues to improve. He’s an older guy but still full of energy and life. He was dragging me around pretty well when he didn’t want to get locked up again after a walk.
Not sure what the cost is going to be yet, but, we always appreciate financial support!!! Link to Zeffy is pinned on top of our page.
Hoping everyone else’s babies are doing well!!!
Stay safe, dry warm and healthy!

Happy 19th birthday to Reilly, aka: Redwood Fever. He still acts like a baby, always in your pocket.

We had a shelter logic shed collapse this year, in spite using ratchet straps for cross bracing. That’ helped for a few years. Bob Borrusso, our VP came up with this idea for extra ribs. We’ll see if it works, but thought I’d pass the idea on for everyone else with this problem. PVC pipe as the extra ribs between each space and t’s cut so they can clip over the pipe. We are trying one extra rib in each space right now, but it might need two. I’ll keep everyone updated on how it works out. If you try it, let us know how it works for you.

For anyone who doesn’t have electricity to the barn or wants to lighten the load on their tank heater: 2x 100 gallon tanks insulated between with silver foil bubble wrap. 1x 60 gallon tank with a hole cut the size of a Home Depot bucket. The Home Depot bucket has holes drilled down low on the side. I actually don’t use the bucket anymore. Even when it freezes it’s much easier to break the ice through. We use it all year because it keeps the water cooler in the summer also.

12° on the farm right now. Holding steady for the last couple hours. Lots of ice on the water, but it all broke through pretty easily surprisingly. Not so bad when the wind’s not blowing. Thank goodness it’s sunny! Praying everybody’s livestock is doing well, and that everybody’s staying safe and warm out there! No pictures. I’m not taking my gloves off to be able to use the phone that way. I’m writing this from inside the house. The only animals here are aren’t happy, are the cats and the goat. Everybody else is out and doing their thing. Stay safe, everybody!
