In Tamak Nala near Joshimath, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, intense rainfall triggered by a cloudburst caused floodwaters to surge through the area, washing away a bridge.

Videos from the scene show the powerful force of the water carrying away the structure, highlighting how quickly mountain weather can become dangerous.

What happened?

🌧️ A cloudburst triggered intense rainfall in a short time.

In some of Chile's driest coastal regions, communities are collecting freshwater directly from fog using large mesh structures called fog catchers.

As the coastal fog—known locally as camanchaca—passes through the mesh, tiny water droplets stick to the fibers. The droplets combine, flow into collection channels, and are stored for use.

Today, this harvested water is helping support:

💧 Drinking-water supplies
🌱 Agriculture
🌿 Local ecosystems
🏜️ Communities facing severe water scarcity

Instead of relying only on rainfall, this simple approach captures moisture that is already present in the air.

Fog harvesting is not a universal replacement for rivers, groundwater, or rainfall. It works best in locations with frequent coastal fog and suitable weather conditions, and researchers continue to study where it can be used most effectively.

As freshwater becomes more precious around the world, ideas like this show how nature and engineering can work together in unexpected ways.

Most batteries outlive the gadgets they power. This new idea tries to change that. 🦀🔋

Researchers have developed a biodegradable zinc battery using chitosan, a natural material extracted from crab shells. Instead of becoming long-lasting electronic waste, the battery can naturally break down in about 45 days after disposal under suitable conditions.

Unlike traditional lithium-based batteries, this design uses zinc and biodegradable materials, making it a promising option for reducing battery waste. The study also suggests these batteries can power certain devices for weeks, depending on the application.

Here's what makes it interesting:

🦀 Made from chitosan found in crab shells
🔋 Uses zinc instead of lithium
🌱 Designed to biodegrade in around 45 days
💰 Built with relatively low-cost, naturally derived materials
♻️ Aims to help reduce electronic waste

According to the latest U.S. Energy Information Administration forecast, developers plan to add around 86 GW of utility-scale generating capacity in 2026.

Here's where that planned capacity comes from:

☀️ Solar — 43.4 GW (51%)
🔋 Battery storage — 24 GW (28%)
💨 Wind — ~12 GW (14%)

Together, solar, batteries and wind account for approximately 93% of planned utility-scale capacity additions.

That's significant—not because fossil-fuel generation has disappeared, but because the composition of new capacity is shifting heavily toward solar, storage and wind.

🔋 Batteries are especially important because they can store electricity and help balance the grid when renewable generation changes.

🌞 Solar continues to dominate new additions, while wind remains an important part of the expansion.

📌 Important: These are planned capacity additions, not guaranteed projects or actual electricity generation. Projects can be delayed, canceled or changed.

The bigger question is whether this pipeline will translate into a faster transformation of America's electricity system.

The glaciers of Gilgit-Baltistan are more than spectacular landscapes—they are a critical source of water for communities across the region.

Northern Pakistan's Karakoram contains thousands of glaciers and represents one of the world's major concentrations of mountain ice outside the polar regions.

🌡️ Rising temperatures are affecting glaciers across the broader Hindu Kush–Himalaya–Karakoram region, although the response is not uniform. Some Karakoram glaciers have shown relative stability or even periods of advance, while others are retreating.

💧 Why does this matter?

Glaciers act as natural water stores. Their meltwater contributes to rivers that support:

🌾 Agriculture
🏘️ Communities
⚡ Hydropower
💧 Drinking-water supplies

But glacier loss can also increase another danger.

🌊 Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) can occur when water stored behind unstable natural barriers is suddenly released, sending powerful floodwater downstream and potentially damaging roads, bridges and settlements.

The future of these mountains matters far beyond Pakistan. The wider Himalayan and Karakoram region feeds major Asian river systems that support hundreds of millions of people.

🏔️ Protecting these mountain ecosystems means protecting water security for generations to come.

Pennsylvania health officials are monitoring a growing measles outbreak as schools prepare to reopen.

Because measles is extremely contagious, increased close contact in classrooms can create more opportunities for transmission, particularly in communities with lower vaccination coverage.

🦠 Why measles spreads so easily:
• An infected person can potentially infect many people who aren't immune.
• The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an indoor space.
• Symptoms can include fever, cough, runny nose and a characteristic rash.

💉 Vaccination remains the primary way to prevent measles. According to the CDC, two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles when both doses are given.

🏫 As students return to school, health authorities are encouraging families to make sure routine vaccinations are up to date and to follow local public-health guidance.

Here's the basic idea:

🌬️ 1. Capture: Fans move atmospheric air through specialized filters that separate CO₂ from the air.

💧 2. Process: The captured CO₂ is concentrated and prepared for permanent storage.

🪨 3. Underground Storage: The CO₂ is injected underground, where Iceland's geological storage approach is designed to mineralize it into stable carbonates over time.

🌱 Why Is This Interesting?

Direct air capture could potentially help address emissions that are difficult to eliminate completely, while also removing some CO₂ that has already accumulated in the atmosphere.

But there's an important catch:

⚡ It requires significant energy.
💰 It remains expensive compared with simply avoiding emissions.
🏭 The technology is still being scaled.
🌍 It cannot replace rapid reductions in fossil-fuel emissions.

So direct air capture is best viewed as one potential tool in a much larger climate strategy—not a standalone solution.
