We’re proud to celebrate Hochkammer Dairy Farm as this year’s @ Manitowoc County Breakfast on the Farm host! 🐄🌱

Cory Krueger, one of the owner/operators of Hochkammer Dairy, is also a Seven Rivers Soil Cooperative member. In this video, Cory talks about their cover crops and the “why” behind their long-term commitment to conservation.

Practices like cover crops, grassed waterways, nutrient management, and other conservation efforts are part of the bigger story of how local farms are working to protect soil and water while raising crops and caring for livestock.

Stop out to Breakfast on the Farm at Hochkammer Dairy and see conservation in action.

Congratulations to Cory Krueger, the Hochkammer family, and the entire Hochkammer Dairy team on hosting this year’s event.

More feed. Living cover. W**d suppression. Soil protection. A practical transition from alfalfa to corn. Thanks to Between the Lakes Demonstration Farm Network for hosting this pop-up field day!

That’s conservation in action.

Don’s tip for success: start with a thinner rye stand for easier planting. He’s cut back to about 20 lbs/acre and uses more oats, which winterkill, to keep things manageable in spring.

His biggest “what not to do”? Don’t let someone who says “that’ll never work” be the reason you never try.

Like every conservation practice, success comes down to timing, conditions, equipment, and learning from farmers who are making it work.
