Roses and clematis are natural partners, creating garden displays that feel timeless, romantic, and effortlessly abundant. In this visually rich presentation, attendees will learn how to pair these two spectacular plant groups for stunning results. We will cover design ideas, variety selection, and maintenance tips to keep both vines and shrubs thriving together for years of color and fragrance. Drawing on decades of experience, Linda Beutler shares practical guidance and inspiration to help gardeners craft their own captivating combinations—proof that some garden pairings really are made to last.

Linda Beutler grows a great variety of plants on a simple city lot in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Her passion for clematis led to the publication of her first book, Gardening with Clematis (2004) followed by two more Timber Press titles: Garden to Vase (2007), and 2016’s Plant Lovers Guide to Clematis. But before clematis, there were old garden roses.

Linda serves as curator of the Rogerson Clematis Collection (owned by the non-profit Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection), North America’s only accredited clematis collection, and she is a Past President of the International Clematis Society (and still serves on the Council). In July 2018 she was presented a Golden Clematis Award by the International Clematis Society for her service to the Society and the genus Clematis. She has been an adjunct instructor of horticulture at Clackamas Community College (CCC) from since 1996, specializing in herbaceous perennials—their cultivation and design—and cutting gardens for home and commerce. Linda lectures internationally on a variety of gardening topics and is an avid garden traveler. One of her favorite destinations is the shale barrens of Virginia, where little grows except clematis. The rose has a long and legendary history that even exceeds modern man. It is a flower that has captivated people for its beauty, fragrance, culinary and medicinal attributes. There are even mystical attributes that color the lure of the rose. As the growing season gets into full swing, the lure of growing this magical plant gets us back into the garden, pondering what to do next to experience another flush of blooms.

Toni Simonetti is an Advanced Master Garden and ARS Consulting Rosarian. She lives in Westport, Connecticut, a coastal town in climate zone 7a, with more than 80 roses in a small “downtown” garden, along with collections of other favorites such as clematis, primrose, peony, hydrangea, magnolia, viburnum, tropicals, succulents, herbs, and a new fascination with specimen evergreens.

She is a voting member of the American Rose Society (ARS) Board of Directors and its Executive Committee, Immediate Past President of the Manhattan Rose Society, a member of the Connecticut Rose Society Board, and is the Northeast Regional Director for the ARS. She is also a lead volunteer at the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens in Stamford, CT, where she is currently directing a new trial rose garden for the American Garden Rose Selections (AGRS) program.
