The rose has a long and legendary history that even exceeds modern man. It is a flower that has captivated people for its beauty, fragrance, culinary and medicinal attributes. There are even mystical attributes that color the lure of the rose. As the growing season gets into full swing, the lure of growing this magical plant gets us back into the garden, pondering what to do next to experience another flush of blooms.

Toni Simonetti is an Advanced Master Garden and ARS Consulting Rosarian. She lives in Westport, Connecticut, a coastal town in climate zone 7a, with more than 80 roses in a small “downtown” garden, along with collections of other favorites such as clematis, primrose, peony, hydrangea, magnolia, viburnum, tropicals, succulents, herbs, and a new fascination with specimen evergreens.

She is a voting member of the American Rose Society (ARS) Board of Directors and its Executive Committee, Immediate Past President of the Manhattan Rose Society, a member of the Connecticut Rose Society Board, and is the Northeast Regional Director for the ARS. She is also a lead volunteer at the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens in Stamford, CT, where she is currently directing a new trial rose garden for the American Garden Rose Selections (AGRS) program.

Steve Roussell will present "Hydration Propagation of Roses".
Learn about a unique way to propagate roses, Hydration Propagation, from expert rosarian and hybridizer Steve Roussell. Steve will show us how to root cuttings by keeping them from drying out or hydrated. He will also demonstrate two different grafting methods that would be easy and interesting for you to try at home.
Steve Roussell is a member of the Southwest Louisiana Rose Society, Houston Rose Society, and three other local societies, as well as the ARS and Rose Hybridizers Association. He and his wife Carmen have been growing roses at their home in Lake. Charles, Louisiana for more than 45 years. Steve started hybridizing in 2010 and successfully turned his rose growing hobby into a profession.
Steve is interested in creating roses with fragrance, vigor, disease resistance and either good garden rose or show rose form. Some of his varieties now in commerce include: 'Clovie', 'Vibrant Vonnie', 'Liz's Charm', 'American Maid' and 'Rocket'. They are available at either Wisconsin Roses or K&M Roses. He has shared his knowledge about rose hybridizing at the ARS National Convention in Milwaukee and at rose society meetings across the country.

Request for Help to Save an Old Rose - “Hello, I’m Ben Sloat, an artist and director of the MFA in Visual Arts program at Clark University in Worcester.

On the grounds of the St Mark's Church in the East Village of Manhattan, I have discovered a rosebush planted by the artist Gordon Matta-Clark in 1970.

As a project to share this wonderful plant, and as an homage to the artist, I’d love help in taking cuttings from this rosebush to propagate and share with others. (I have been given permission from Anne Marie Witchger, Rector at the St. Mark's Church, to take cuttings) This gesture of remembrance, as well as the ongoing caretaking, is of great importance to the ethos of this project. Help in identifying this rose would also be appreciated.

I’d love to commission someone experienced to help me realize this project and have it come to fruition. I’ve included an image of the rosebush in question. If you are interested in this project, please email me: [email protected]
