The annual electronics waste recycling event returns to the entrance to Inwood Hill Park, Seaman Avenue & Isham Street, Saturday, Oct. 10 @ 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. This is your opportunity to dispose of old computers, keyboards, laptops, printers and other items in an environmentally beneficial way. Clothing and other textiles are also being collected. See flyer for more details. This event is being held by the Lower East Side Ecology Center, in conjunction with the Department of Sanitation and the City Council, and is co-sponsored by Friends of Inwood Hill Park.

🌱We’re grateful for our NYC Parks friends at Citywide Nursery, and volunteers, who grew and tended the native flowers and shrubs we’ll be planting at our City of Forest Day event at Inwood Hill Park!

Come on out to Seaman and Isham at 10am to join us to dig in and welcome our new plants to the forest edge today, Saturday, October 3rd!

Stay safe and dry this weekend and then join us on October 3rd for City of Forest Day in Inwood Hill Park! Along with our partners from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the Urban Park Rangers, we will be celebrating the urban forest of Inwood Hill Park as part of the city-wide celebration organized by Forest for All NYC. This day raises awareness of about the importance of the forests across New York City and how the role that New Yorkers play is essential in caring for the “lungs” of our city! Whether it’s planting or making crafts or joining a guided hike through the old growth forest, we hope to see you there!

🍂Summer might be fading away but our fall slate of events is just getting started. We are excited to be co-sponsoring a free jazz performance on the Nature Center on September 12th, from 3:30 to 4:30, in partnership with the Inwood Jazz Festival and light refreshments generously donated by The Inwood Farm.

We are also excited to have a full month of stewardship including a continuation of our trail maintenance workshop that cleared a tree that had been blocking a trail for over a month! As a reminder, this workshop is for volunteers who already have some stewardship training and want to improve their skills. If you have already started or completed an NYC Parks Super Steward training, or been certified as a Pathkeeper through the Natural Areas Conservancy, this is for you! Please be aware that this event is not suitable for anyone under 18 and will include a higher risk of poison ivy exposure than our typical stewardship events. We will provide Tecnu wipes for all attendees just in case.

We can’t wait to see you in the park!

🌳🎷Inwood Jazz Festival and Friends of Inwood Hill Park invite you to join us in celebrating 100 YEARS OF INWOOD HILL PARK with a special musical presentation at the INWOOD HILL NATURE CENTER. This Saturday, September 12 from 3:30–4:30 PM.

The Quartal Saxophone Saxophone Quartet (QSSQ), led by Inwood musician Don Slatoff, will present a distinctive program featuring works by Julius Hemphill, Pixinguinha, Michael Blake, Baden Powell, and Gerry Dodgion.

The quartet brings together four accomplished saxophonists, with Don Slatoff on baritone saxophone, Michael Blake on soprano, James Elmore III on alto, piano and Peter Brainin on tenor.

We’ve had such a wonderful summer with all our volunteers! Between City of Water Day, our regular stewardship events, cleanups with our friends at Inwood Canoe Club, Hike the Heights, and more, we have loved being in the park(s) with all of you. This month we’re revisiting places that were affected by the November 2024 wildfires and keeping the efforts to restore them going. This is important work for the health of the forest, and we hope to see you 🫵 there 🌳

Did you catch that there are five weekends in August? We did too! We’re excited to use this “bonus” weekend to show some love to the trails of Inwood Hill Park and the amazing volunteers who take care of them, known as Pathkeepers. These trailblazers (pun intended) are trained by the incredible Natural Areas Conservancy as part of the Super Steward Urban PATH (People Advancing Trails and Habitat) program in partnership with NAC and the Parks Department. And if you’re a Pathkeeper or a Super Steward, you’re invited! This will be an intensive workshop to develop your trail maintenance skills, connect with other Pathkeepers, and take what you’ve learned back to your home park.
We ask that children under 18 years old stay home due to the intensive nature of the work and the higher risk of poison ivy exposure.

🔬Celebrate City of Water Day with BioBus at Inwood Hill Park! On Saturday, climb aboard a BioBus Mobile Lab where BioBus’ Community Scientists will show you how to use one of their high-powered microscopes to explore samples of bugs, dirt, water, and other organic matter from your neighborhood! Stop by anytime for a quick 5 minute exploration or stay for 30 minutes (or even the entire event!) for a variety of science experiences.

BioBus events are primarily designed for K-12 students, with a variety of options available based on student age, interests, and experience with science. Families and other scientists have a great time too!

We hope everyone is staying cool in the heat! We are excited for a full month of stewardship events, including a post-4th of July trash cleanup to remove any lingering litter, forest stewardship on 7/11 where we take a Big Gulp out of invasive vines in the forest undergrowth, and the return of City of Water Day, organized by Waterfront Alliance and NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program, on July 25th!
