I know I should try to post more updates about our Zanmi ladies but with the ongoing crisis in Haiti I keep hoping to report good news....and instead the ongoing crisis continues month after month......I am afraid sadly, it will be some time before Haitians are able to live in peace and safety again. The gang wars continue and they now control over 60% of Haiti's capitol,Port Au Prince. Where daily life has long been difficult, it has now become impossibly dangerous.....and even our Project Medishare partners are struggling to continue to provide the desperately needed health care during these incredibly difficult times.
There is some good news ... and I want to share it too....In the region of Haiti where the ladies in our project live, the Plateau Central there is no problem with violent gangs kidnapping and stealing and terrorizing. Ironically, the people living in this region are so poor that the gangs have no interest in them ..the irony of misfortune becoming fortunate. .
The much better news is, the ladies in our project are still able to create beautifully crafted baskets from repurposed materials and we are able to still continue paying them for their work. This means the ladies in our project are able to buy food for their families and also afford to pay the school fees so their children can attend school. These amazing women simply needed to be provided an 'opportunity'- and with that, they empowered themselves. What these ladies have already accomplished causes me to wonder what could Haiti become, if simply given an 'opportunity'?
