We believe in immigrants and what they can achieve, and we give them the tools to do it. The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) of Malden, MA, is a not-for-profit organization that helps immigrants and refugees become successful workers, parents and community members through direct service programs and public education. Our direct service program provides free year-round English classes to immi

grant and refugee adults in Greater Boston. The ILC further supports immigrants through the Public Education Institute, which informs Americans about immigrants and immigration in the United States.

📚 PreK - Elementary teachers: Get ready for the school year and bring immigrant stories into the classroom!

Our Community Across Cultures book guides, created with pedagogy and content experts, are a great way to turn story time read alouds into a fun way to learn about different cultures, fostering empathy among both immigrant and native-born students. You can find all of them on our website or at the link in the comments!

The book guides provide discussion questions, pronunciation tips and short primers on the topics to touch on.

ALL of our students are the American story. 🇺🇸

As we begin enrollment for our fall session, we're filled with pride for our immigrant students. They exemplify what it means to have perseverance and passion. They want to be here. They want to succeed, whether it means starting their own businesses, finding work, continuing their education or becoming citizens.

🖼️ Immigration has shaped our communities, our culture and our lives. This year, our Teen Perspectives Art and Essay Contest tasked high school students at Everett Public Schools, Massachusetts, Malden Public Schools and Medford Public Schools with exploring the theme "How My Community Benefits Immigration."

We received over 80 submissions, and the winners are on display now at Arlington Center for the Arts through early September!

📅 You can visit the gallery and see this and other exhibits at the following times:

Wednesday: 9:00AM - 7:00PM (with masked-only hours 5:00 -7:00 PM)

🗣️Three alumni joined us this week to talk about life after The ILC, and they had a lot of great advice to share to with current students.

Like many of our former students, they went on to continue their educations, including getting their high school equivalency. One even started his own construction business!

The ILC is just one step on in these students' journeys, and we're so proud of all they have achieved!

Neslihan is the American story. 🇺🇸

Neslihan was a guidance counselor in her native Turkey. She loved her job and had dreams of doing more, but she and her husband knew there was real opportunity in America, so they made the move.

She needed to strengthen her English to continue her career, so she started English classes at a local organization. However, they only had classes two days a week, and from her experience as an educator, she knew it wasn’t enough.

That’s why she enrolled at The Immigrant Learning Center. All students, including Neslihan, have access to immersive English classes up to five days a week.

“It's so important because my last English class was only two days. It's not enough. Every day here is English. Every day [is] writing. Every day [is] reading English. It's improved my English so much," she said.

Neslihan took all that she learned and enrolled in a paraprofessional program. She will be able to utilize her skills while also filling a significant need for paraprofessionals in our schools.

She also hopes to continue her education and get her guidance counselor degree. She is, as she says, on the “true pathway” for life.

"We are relevant and important. Our contribution makes a difference"

Luiz Thomaz DaCosta is a winner of the Immigrant Learning Center’s 2025 Barry M. Portnoy Immigrant Entrepreneur Award. He was born in the state of Paraná in Brazil in 1971. He grew up in a modest family as the youngest of four children. His father was a pastor, and his mother a teacher. Their strong work ethic and Christian values shaped his upbringing.

Guided by his personal motto— “you can give up because of hardships, or you can succeed despite them. I chose to succeed.”—he remains committed to pushing forward rather than being discouraged by obstacles. He says, “I don't want to be successful or famous, but be relevant.” Mr. DaCosta hopes his journey serves as a meaningful example, not for fame or recognition, but for creating a positive impact in the lives of others.
