Shout out to our Zontian sister, Karen Wheelock for continuing to fight for human rights at Boston's Pride March.

Karen was interviewed and quoted on WGBH

"Karen Wheelock came from Malden and waited at the beginning of the parade to try to see Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Governor Maura Healey."

“I wanted to see … all the political people in Massachusetts that are helping us keep our rights, which was a long journey to get here,” Wheelock, who is 79, said. “I admire all of them for making sure that I still have all my rights, which I didn’t for most of my life.”

These rights cannot be taken for granted, Thank you Karen for continuing to advocate for generations to come!

The Zonta Club of Malden marked Earth Day with a hands-on community project, planting a City traffic island with pollinator-friendly plants. The island on Pleasant Street between the Malden Center MBTA Station and District Kitchen got a complete makeover. The plantings were purchased by the Zonta Club and members came prepared with garden tools and worked together to get all the plants in the ground. Cemetery Director and Tree Warden Chris Rosa volunteered his time to assist.

The new plantings include Golden Alexander, Mountain Mint, Wood Aster, Northern Blue Flag, Lowbush Blueberry, Winterberry, St. John’s Wort and Serviceberry. The variety was selected for known support of native bees, honeybees, and butterflies along with a wide range of beneficial insects. The berries and seeds also provide essential food sources for birds such as robins and swallows during harsh winters when food is scarce.

This effort helps support pollinators and other beneficial insects while beautifying the area and promoting environmental stewardship. By choosing nectar-rich species, Zonta is working to contribute to healthier urban ecosystems and raise awareness about the importance of pollinators in sustaining biodiversity.

The Zonta Club of Malden brought the community together in a powerful celebration of leadership, service, and advocacy at its annual Women Making a Difference event held at Rosaria’s Restaurant in Saugus.

The fully packed gathering was attended by Mayor Gary Christenson, and many elected officials including State Representatives Steve Ultrino and Kate Lipper-Garabedian, City Councilors Peg Crowe (Ward 1), Council President Amanda Linehan (Ward 3), Ryan O’Malley (Ward 4), Steve Winslow (Ward 6), Jadeane Sica (Ward eight) Carey McDonald (At Large) and School Committee members Elizabeth Hortie (Ward 5) and Keith Bernard (Ward 8.) Zonta members Ari Taylor (Ward 5), Michelle Luong (At Large) and Karen Colon Hayes (At Large) were in attendance as well.

The 2026 honorees represented the extraordinary achievements of women whose work strengthens the city, supports vulnerable populations, and inspires the next generation of leaders.

Each woman recognized has demonstrated a deep commitment to improving the lives of others, often working quietly behind the scenes to create lasting change. Ari Taylor was honored for her community activism and inclusive leadership; Imene Bouziane Saidi was honored for her advocacy and efforts to advance causes of those in the Disability Community; Elizabeth Santiago was highlighted for her work as a published author who works to ensure that all writers voices are heard; and Linda Cochran was honored for her tireless work with the recovery community and dismantling the stigma surrounding addiction. Two humanitarian awards were presented - Officer Amanda Grenier was honored for her work on the Malden Police Department - highlighted was her recent George L. Hanna award for outstanding bravery - the Commonwealth’s highest award for bravery; and Bread if Life was commended for their ongoing heroic work feeding those disadvantaged in our community while working to address the broader issues of food insecurity.

Zonta President and newly elected Zonta District 1 Lt. Governor Maria Luise emphasized that the event is more than an awards ceremony, but a reminder of the collective power of women who step forward to lead. Maria thanked the Women Making a Difference Committee led by Michelle Luong and reiterated that communities thrive when women are empowered.

The evening’s biggest moments were the heartfelt remarks by each of the honorees who reiterated that they can’t do their work alone and are grateful to their families and the community. Many spoke about the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and creating opportunities for women to lead.

The Malden Zonta Club, part of Zonta International, continues its mission to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. The Women Making a Difference event is one of the club’s signature events, designed to:
