The Zonta Club of Malden brought the community together in a powerful celebration of leadership, service, and advocacy at its annual Women Making a Difference event held at Rosaria’s Restaurant in Saugus.
The fully packed gathering was attended by Mayor Gary Christenson, and many elected officials including State Representatives Steve Ultrino and Kate Lipper-Garabedian, City Councilors Peg Crowe (Ward 1), Council President Amanda Linehan (Ward 3), Ryan O’Malley (Ward 4), Steve Winslow (Ward 6), Jadeane Sica (Ward eight) Carey McDonald (At Large) and School Committee members Elizabeth Hortie (Ward 5) and Keith Bernard (Ward 8.) Zonta members Ari Taylor (Ward 5), Michelle Luong (At Large) and Karen Colon Hayes (At Large) were in attendance as well.
The 2026 honorees represented the extraordinary achievements of women whose work strengthens the city, supports vulnerable populations, and inspires the next generation of leaders.
Each woman recognized has demonstrated a deep commitment to improving the lives of others, often working quietly behind the scenes to create lasting change. Ari Taylor was honored for her community activism and inclusive leadership; Imene Bouziane Saidi was honored for her advocacy and efforts to advance causes of those in the Disability Community; Elizabeth Santiago was highlighted for her work as a published author who works to ensure that all writers voices are heard; and Linda Cochran was honored for her tireless work with the recovery community and dismantling the stigma surrounding addiction. Two humanitarian awards were presented - Officer Amanda Grenier was honored for her work on the Malden Police Department - highlighted was her recent George L. Hanna award for outstanding bravery - the Commonwealth’s highest award for bravery; and Bread if Life was commended for their ongoing heroic work feeding those disadvantaged in our community while working to address the broader issues of food insecurity.
Zonta President and newly elected Zonta District 1 Lt. Governor Maria Luise emphasized that the event is more than an awards ceremony, but a reminder of the collective power of women who step forward to lead. Maria thanked the Women Making a Difference Committee led by Michelle Luong and reiterated that communities thrive when women are empowered.
The evening’s biggest moments were the heartfelt remarks by each of the honorees who reiterated that they can’t do their work alone and are grateful to their families and the community. Many spoke about the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and creating opportunities for women to lead.
