Great info from our friend Dannielle.
Happy ℍ𝕦𝕞𝕡 Day.... 🐪🐫 and while we’re on that topic- Let’s talk baby making.
Are neonatal kittens adorable? Yes obviously, I mean just look at this picture of Oyster as an itty bitty boy 🥺 that being said, I think I speak for most neonate fosters when I say that we would LOVE a kitten season where we aren’t getting requests DAILY to take in kittens that have been abandoned, orphaned, or KittNapped but some well-meaning citizen.
Did you know that in 8 years, ONE single unfixed female can lead to 2,072,514 new cats? No. That wasn’t a typo. With an average of 2 litters a year, and 2.8 surviving kittens per litter, and all of those surviving kittens not being spayed/ neutered.... 😳
In the United States, its estimated that 70,000 kittens and puppies are born daily, and more than 3.7 million animals are being euthanized across the country in different shelters. That doesn’t even begin to take into account the ones that are simply never found by humans, or the Queens (the mother cat) that suffer because of overbreeding.
Most county shelters (and rescues such as SPCA, etc) offer some type of TNR program. You can also then find low-cost clinics in your area that also offer Spay/Neuter services for both resident and community cats. We personally have programs here in Orange County (FL) with rates starting at $25, some with a sliding scale depending upon income, and others that even offer free TNR when you sign up for a colony.
If you’re in Orange County (FL) here’s some great groups/ shelters that you can work with for Spay/Neuter services (as well as fostering if you’re able to!!):
Orange County Animal Services
Spay & Neuter Nation
SNiP-it
Spay N Save
Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando
SPCA of Brevard Adoption Center
