Adjacent to Greatness across the pond.

My good friend Brian Lindsay, aka Flyin' Bri, took a copy of my short read on servant leadership with him on one of his many trips overseas.

Brian however, has taken much more impactful reads filled with resiliency and hope with him on these long flights, many of which I have been honored to recieve from him a read.

Most recently authors who are battling ALS and 8 year old's fleeing Germany. Stories that are hard to comprehend, process and believe that anyone could overcome these monumental challenges.

Thank you Brian for always changing my perspective and connecting me to those who have accomplish and overcome so much.

Wait, women in combat? You mean besides the last 400 years of conflict they have fought in?

Serving with women assigned to FET, Lioness and intelligence teams completely changed my perspective on women in combat, that fought and died beside their men counterparts for generations. The book above shed light on the 200 years that women have been defending America, while many times in the shadows and limited on rights.

If you haven't read American Women by Gail Collins, buy it. Almost impossible to put down, and as a man, the details of what struggle looked like for way too long is ever prevalent. No surprise that those I served beside in combat were so amazing, as they came from a long line of heroism and service to the Nation.

P.S. Gorgeous backdrop provided in Portland, Oregon

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was filmed at the Oregon State Hospital, an actual psychiatric hospital that Patrick and I visited last week.

The museum, is the States original psychiatric hospital, filled with history as physcologists attempted to learn and treat the mentally ill. Lessons learned the hard way, in a place that was stricken with patients as young as 4 years old.

The volunteers were well versed in each year of it's existence and what treatments and coinciding ailments the residents were facing. Remembering that many of the early years of the establishment were impacted by the civil war, rapid industrialization, urbanization, social isolation, cultural displacement, infectious disease and extremely high mortality rates.

For those intrigued by mental illness and what we still owe so many living with post war trauma and trauma from everyday life, it is worth a visit if ever rolling through Salem, Oregon.

We were sent to motivate at the Oregon State Penitentiary, yet those in the crowd did that work.

Patrick Berryessa and I had the honor of conducting the Murph with Inmates at the Oregon State Prison last week. It couldn't be further from what I expected, and will take weeks to full break down what I experienced.

A place that many would presume would be disconnected from hope and resiliency , was bursting at the seams. Individuals that fully accepted their past and are not only becoming the best version of themselves , but serving others outside the walls is ever prevalent.

Their daily roles supported not only their internal community, but the entire state of Oregon. Processing thousands of pounds of linen for hospitals, repairing state vehicles, building furniture for schools, providing CAD support for large projects, and the small daily tasks of supporting one another to appointments, pharmacy, and throughout the building for health and growth of their fellow inmates.

A lot more to come on the humanity experienced, emotional conversations had and amazing projects they have championed and completed.

These men (besides the scrub in the middle) are simply the best in what they do to honor, protect and remember not only our veterans and our fallen, but the communities in which they serve daily. Once again "Adjacent to Greatness".

On a side note, the wall behind us has a missing name, one of a Marine who also served in 1st Bn 6th Marines, in WWII at Tarawa. For those unfamiliar, the battle showed just how deadly future Pacific assaults would be at places like Battle of Iwo Jima and Battle of Okinawa. Roughly 1,000 Americans were killed and over 2,000 wounded in just three days on an island only about 2 miles long.

Norwood Ohio native Private First Class Harold W. Hayden, worked as a caddy at Cincinnati’s Maketwah Country Club, where he won an amateur title in 1941. Hayden would be killed on the 2nd day of the 76 hour battle while running ammunition to a gunner in the deadly fight.

His remains were missing for nearly eight decades before being identified and interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in 2021.

Bipartisan was mentioned frequently with two politicians who have done so much from both sides of the isle being recognized for their mil/vet advocacy, but what I really saw and heard went much deeper.

The Salute event was a culmination and collaboration of the nations largest and most impactful 501's, Veteran Service Organizations, for-profit entities, political leaders and advocates of real, long term change.

Thank you to Hunter, Lynn, finucan, mireles and so many others dedicated to policy change and advocacy where it matters the most.

"In Fourteen Hundred Ninety Two".... you know the rest. But do you know the true beginnings?

I have always been a history nerd, but I recently dove into Alan Taylors American Colonies and the detail is amazing. As I attempt to intimately learn further details of history, to ensure we don't repeat it, I am so appreciative of works like this that do so much research and exploration into specific stories of those who came before us.

“Those who understand history recognize patterns before others see problems. Those who ignore it usually become part of it.”

Honored to remind so many of What We Owe our Fallen on Memorial Day.

A debt we can never fully repay, but are forever indebted to chip away at it through Rememberance, Advocacy, and living our lives in Service to Others as our Fallen Brothers and Sisters did so Valiantly.
