The white-tailed deer you see everywhere and eating the plants in your garden, was once a rare site in North America. Before European explorers, it's estimated there were upwards of 30 million deer across the continent. But by 1890, due to overhunting, their population fell 99% to just 300,000 (roughly the population of Cincinnati) spread across the whole North American continent. It was thanks to early conservation laws and efforts that the white-tailed deer population has completely rebounded today. Giving hope to other species facing similar threats today.

It was a busy morning at the Pendery Nature Trail. We got the two trail signs installed, a screech owl box and wood duck box installed, and cut some honeysuckle. Thank you to everyone who made out to help this morning!

Congratulations to our very own Jim Benton!

Jim uses his Twelve Mile Farm to showcase how conservation and workload can coexist. He has also with the help of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, put a 63-acre conservation easement on a stream corridor near the Ohio River. Jim will be giving a presentation later this year on conservation easements from a land owners perspective pulling from his personal experience.

This is the time of year that the mulberries are ripe. We have two mulberries the area, red and white mulberry. Red mulberry is the native mulberry and white mulberry is the non-native. This time of year you can tell the difference by looking at the length of their fruits. The red has the longer of the two. The red also has bigger and less glossy looking leaves than the white. Both are delicious and are safe for humans to eat when ripe.
