Starting this August, Seven Valleys Health Coalition is coordinating the Food Sense Program in Cortland, and the new pick-up location will be right at our Food Rescue Hub (174 Homer Ave).

Food Sense, a long-running program of Food Bank of Central New York, offers a monthly box of staple grocery items at a discounted price as well as a selection of family-sized specials, open to anyone looking to stretch their grocery dollars.

Importantly, Seven Valleys would like to recognize Cortland Loaves & Fishes for their many years of hard work, generosity, and dedication to the coordination of this program, and we appreciate the opportunity to keep it going strong!

Founded by Kay Matthews, Director of Shades of Blue Project, this week allows us to confront multiple barriers that Black birthing people face, examine practical solutions, and draw attention to the benefit of community support and compassion training. The theme for 2026 is “Rooted in Legacy: Honoring Our Stories, Healing and Thriving Together for Generational Impact,” reminding us that every Black birthing person’s story matters, every challenge faced is part of a larger tapestry of perseverance and transformation, and that we need to honor the stories of the Black individuals who paved the way.
Mental health is a critical issue among Black birthing individuals as they navigate multiple barriers to care and treatment, while experiencing higher rates of mental health conditions and higher maternal mortality rates. Barriers include:
• Systemic and structural racism.
• Cultural stigma surrounding mental health.
• Distrust of healthcare and child welfare systems.
• Underrepresentation of Black birthing individuals in the perinatal mental health workforce.
• A need for mental health literacy for anxiety, depression, and other conditions.
• Black birthing individuals being encouraged to cope with stressors by showing “strength” instead of asking for help.
