Beatrix Potter wasn't just a story teller, she was an amazing botanical. It wasn't easy being an artist in her day and Marta McDowell has the story. Come meet her and check out her new book on Oct. 15 at The Nature of Reading Bookshop

We’re very excited to announce that we’re hosting Marta McDowell’s book launch for her upcoming release, Beatrix Potter’s Botanical: The Art of Flowers and Fungi. Join us as Marta speaks about her lovely book, which showcases 65 plants and fungi that Beatrix Potter made special study of in her often-overlooked career as a botanical artist. For each species we see Potter’s original pencil and watercolor renderings, learn about the specimen’s role in her various beloved gardens, and hear the stories of how it inspired or appeared in her literary work. Mark your calendars for 7pm on October 15th! The event is free and open to all, we just ask that you sign up on our website in advance. You can also pre-order We’re so excited for this one and we hope you can join us 💚🌷📖

Read the book from our recent event, “When the Forest Breathes.” Scientist Suzanne Simard documents how clear cutting and planting of monocrop pine forests makes them tinderboxes. Heavy machinery strips the spongy forest floor and underground fungal connections are lost. Proud to have highlighted Simard’s work in partnership with The Nature of Reading Bookshop.

Say goodbye to lonely trees in mulch islands! Trees love community, as we found out last night. Our event was inspired by the work of Suzanne Simard, author of "Finding the Mother Tree" and "When the Forest Breathes."

To create a healthier tree canopy here in Madison, we learned how to plant pocket forests and how forest rehabilitation is happening at the MRC conservation forest.

Thanks to The Nature of Reading Bookshop and presenters Kirsten Wallenstein of the Environmental Commission and Susan Landau (The Xerces Society educator and restoration leader at Foote's Pond Wood in Morristown). It was a packed event with people eager to make a difference.
