Caribbean Association of Madison Dane county of Madison, Wisconsin. The association also volunteers in the community and supports its' Caribbean community's culture.

The Caribbean Association of Madison (CAM) was formed in 1994 as a forum to bring together people of Caribbean descent and friends of the Caribbean in Wisconsin and neighboring communities to preserve and disseminate the rich culture, history and heritage of its people. The Association, which is exempt under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, provides services that promote and encou

rage the collective cultural, social, educational and economic welfare of its membership and the community by engaging in charitable, civic, and educational activities. Charitable and civic activities include donations to the Haiti Relief Fund, a local Community Center and Radio Station. CAM also assisted in fund raising for the Salvation Army and conducted a clothing drive to benefit students from the Caribbean who are attending college in Illinois. Proceeds from future fund raising activities will be used towards the CAM scholarship program which benefits high school and college students and extending our involvement in Madison and surrounding communities.

🌿 Today, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) joins the global community in observing International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

This year’s theme, “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being,” recognises Indigenous midwives as custodians of ancestral wisdom, trusted caregivers and keepers of traditions that strengthen families and communities across generations.

Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett highlights the enduring legacy, resilience and invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples to our Region

Happy International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples! đŸȘ¶

Indigenous groups in the Southern Caribbean have often been reduced to the labels of “Carib” and “Arawak.” However, historical records prove that there were many different groups existing in these islands for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived.

Some of these groups are the Chaguanes, Warao, Shebayo, Nepuyo, Yaios, Lokono, Karina, Kalinago, Kalipuna, Carinepogoto, Chaima, Arauca and Garifuna.

Their influences can be seen in many aspects of our culture today, as well as in our language. We’re sure you are all familiar with many of the indigenous place names that have survived European colonization, including Arima, Aripo, Arouca, Caura, Carapachaima, Caroni, Chaguanas, Couva, Guaico, Guayaguayare, Mayaro, Mucurapo, Oropouche, Paria, Tacarigua, Tamana and Tunapuna.

Beyond the celebration of cultural symbols such as Amerindian place names, it is also important to recognize the presence of Indigenous people in Trinidad and Tobago, and
