Thanks to the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin for giving us two bluebird houses to install in the prairie. About 300 feet apart and facing south, to keep the prevailing winds out, we are hopeful for birds this coming Spring! Shout out to Paul Noeldner for his assistance with the houses. Thanks to Dave for installing them!

Whenever we wander in the right-of-way, we find cool plants that are growing there already, just waiting for a chance to grow. Today, while planting a few cup plants, we found an orange-fruit horse gentian. As it turns out, it is a great food source for the snowberry clearwing moth, which we have seen in the prairie this Summer. We will keep an eye on the fruits and collect seed this Fall.

Phew!! Today we hosted our final planting session. We installed a flat of prairie dropseed grass, some purple love grass, a few rattlesnake master plants.

We say thanks to the many volunteers who grew the plants, to Dane County Land & Water Resources Department and the Friends of the Arboretum for plant donations and then our volunteer crew and community members who installed them. This year we added well over 1,500 plants. Things are looking great! The Monarch butterflies and pollinators thank you and we Thank You!

Work day tomorrow (9 to 1130 am). Some of the crew will be planting prairie dropseed grass plants that were started in January by volunteers who attended a workshop at the UW Madison. The seedlings are ready to go into the ground!! This weather is perfect for planting native plants! Remember to water them in well!

Common Milkweed Seeds. Thanks go out to Mary for harvesting the pods this season, and for lending a hand in cleaning the pods for the seeds so that we can share them with the Friends of the Monarch Trail and at our upcoming 2027 Seed Swap at Warner Park. Celebrate National Seed Swap Day with us on January 30, 2027 - 1 to 4 pm. More on this closer to the date!

We had a great time with Shabazz students today in the prairie. We learned about pollinators from Elizabeth Braatz and the class members took some wonderful photos of bees, butterflies and birds.

A great day in the prairie! Thanks to Janet, Linda, Kathy, Tim and Mary for the work today! The aster season is upon us and the bees and butterflies were having a great time. (Thanks to Michael for stopping by to say hi!) Mary collected three buckets of seed pods of milkweed, we will clean them next week and some of the seeds will go to the Friends of the Monarch Trail.

We will be hosting Monday Morning Work days through October, as the weather allows. Seed collecting, weeding, and general clean up for the season is the stuff of early Autumn. Weather permitting, we will be working tomorrow 9 to 1130 am! See you in the Prairie!
