Tonight, MMSD leaders, Freedom Schools staff, and one brave scholar presented to the board of education about our beautiful program. And with that, officially, MMSD Freedom Summer 2026 is a wrap. Thank you to all of you for your support as we do our part to grow this powerful movement for children and youth. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

And for our final fun Friday, our scholars visited the UW Kohl Center and Student Activity Center, had ice cream and signed memory books. Because with hope, education, and action we want our scholars to make a difference in themselves and far and wide. The connections they have made this summer have been beautiful to witness 💕💕💕

Our final guest reader of MMSD Freedom Summer 2026 was Representative Renuka Mayadev from Assembly District 77. She is another wonderful example of making a difference with hope education and action because as she explained to our scholars, she worked alongside Marian Wright Edelman and was able to witness her vision for Freedom Schools first hand. Because of this, she was our first guest reader to jump in with the kids and lead our final round of the motivational song Something Inside So Strong!

🍽️Yesterday, we held our final family dinner of MMSD Freedom Summer 2026. The growth from the first dinner to the last is astounding. Our scholars demonstrated their work from the summer with such pride and care for each other. Immense gratitude to all of the community partners, board members and district leadership who showed their support.

Thank you most of all to our families who trusted us with their children for this second pilot summer 💕

A special thank you to Kyreon Lee for coming back to capture our second to last Harambee morning of MMSD's CDF Freedom Schools 2026. Thank you to Joshua Williams for being our guest reader on this special day and for being our first guest reader to capture cool cat in a selfie. He read Stacey Speaks Up which perfectly demonstrates making a difference with hope, education, and action.

Dr. Tay gets an extra special shout out because she came straight from her over night shift to come read to our Freedom Schools scholars. She came armed with her favorite book The Day You Begin and stayed for all of Harambee. Thank you for reminding us that each day is FANTASTIC, TERRIFIC, GREAT even when we might feel a little tired in the moment.
