A thoughtful, heart-rending opinion piece on the recent shooting of , a homeless man on W***y Street.

"Madison waits until poverty becomes a crime before it responds. We wait until someone is checking car doors, sleeping outside, experiencing a crisis or sitting in jail before we decide their circumstances deserve public resources.

Sometimes we wait until they are lying dead in the street.

Then we act surprised by the outcome.".

This huge number of people sleeping outside, people crushed by poverty, people spending 50 or more percent of their disposable income on housing, is why St. John's is dedicated and determined to transform our site into a hundred plus units of affordable housing plus worship and community space. It's why for 20 plus years we provided free overnight space for Porchlight's men's homeless shelter, it's why we continue to have conversations with the county about opportunities to use our building as we're awaiting demolition.

As religion born out of a story about a homeless baby, come to overturn empire and offer all people the opportunity for safety and flourishing, drawing us into connection and fullness with God, followers of the way of Jesus have an opportunity to respond in real and tangible ways that make our community a tiny bit of a window into the kindom of heaven.

Peace be with you Corey, and may the little, homeless, 3-year-old black baby's story have a better ending.

The reign of God is like a tree... Reflecting on the way God's reign has space for all God's beloved creation in its branches.

May you be filled with God's grace and peace for the week ahead.

This is the all too real struggle many of the people who contact St John's Emergency Fund face .

A big thank you to for naming the elephant in the room. We can't expect people to serve in their community or try to improve their own lives and economic outcomes if doing so.costs them more than they make.
